Renault Scenic 07 1.6
Hi All,
i bought a 1.6 petrol grand scenic,
not a fan of french cars but had to buy a 7 seater and that was only one in auction that day.
the price was ok, but some problems were, no wheel locking key, radio was locked, 2 windows were not working.
apart from that everything was ok, but the problem is i got no service history 70500 miles on the clock and says service due after 14000 miles.
the big question is should i get the timing belt changed or assume its been changed?
any Renault owners here please advice,

No documentation - you can't assume anything. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0

Radio locking code - you should be able to get someone to get you the code on ebay - i think theres a guy does it for 99p - have a look around.
Is it the wheel locking key missing or the key to take the screw out of the centre cap? If its just the centre cap screw, it can be taken off with good pointy pliers or again the tool can be bought on ebay for a few pounds. I dont think they're expensive even from the dealer.
The windows - notorious for this. You need to find someone who works at these. Try gumtree for a mobile repairer or ask around locally. It'll be one of two parts fail, but either can be bought off ebay for around £30 - one from memory is a recode, so you send them your bit and they return it recoded.
I would DEFINITELY get the belt done - its due at 70K from memory and they dont last long after that. Assume nothing when it comes to belts.
Otherwise, i'd had no real issues with them - they're prone to the odd electrical gremlin but there are usually work arounds and fixes.
I've probably had an easy 10 of them through the trade over the couple of years i was at it full time and they never really came back much once they were out the door.
I assume if you bought at auction you didnt pay a fortune for it. I wouldnt expect too many issues with it - the diesel is the one that normally gives trouble.0 -
Thank you very much for great replies. I paid 1500 and its a clean exterior x-motability and another owner after that. car was mot'd and was charles hurst trade inn
By The locking wheel nut key i mean the one used to open special locked nuts in every wheel.
I bought the window regulators for 34 off ebay now just have to open door panels
The reason im not sure about timing belt was service indicator stated service due in 14000 miles.
Is there any centralised database like Mazda we can get history print out from?
Any idea how much the belt kit replacing will be from independent garage as sometimes they could be very expensive .
Thanks for your time0 -
You should try calling the previous keeper to find out if they have service records for it, a half hour well spent if it comes back with a sheaf of receipted invoices. If your not absolutely sure, get it done or this could quickly turn into a 1500 pound (kilo?) paperweight.
Ask around and get a locally recommended, independent garage who regularly works on them. They aren't particularly difficult to work on, but old wives tales lay thick in the garage trade.0 -

You should be able to ring charles hurst and see what they have. Then try renault uk customer service if hursts cant see other records.
Timing belt kit isnt expensive for them and its not difficult to fit. The "dephaser pulley" gives trouble on them - there would be a funny rattle noise for the first couple of seconds after startup - and its about £120, but if its not giving trouble i wouldnt be replacing it. The last one i had, had had the dephaser pulley done at 30K miles so theres a fair chance yours has already had one.
If its ex charles hurst, i take it you are northern ireland? did you buy it at wilsons auctions?0 -

You're miles out,its 72k.Seriously though its 72 or 5 years,it'll cost way more if you don't get it done.Went shoplifting at the Disneystore today.
Got a huge Buzz out of it.0 -
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/26827 post here you may get some luck with the radio code.
as for the belts, get the water pump done too.
my megane 1.4 2004 started a little leak in the pump and the belt was done on 70k.
I don't favor this 1.6 16v engine its VVT dephaser cam engine issue's crop up form this sort of miles.
the doors are easy to do if you take your time and don't rush.0 -

Yes, its £120 ish for the dephaser - and you would basically have to pull apart all the work you'd done for a cam belt change if it went.0
