Getting online for first time

A pensioner friend wants to get online for 1st time. He has no landline though there's been one in the flat in the past. I was thinking of recommending him a laptop with a dongle (though not sure about costs )or a tablet (but not sure how these work without a landline). Any suggestions for a solution?

Might want to "experiment" first at the local library. If the friend enjoys the experience and will benefit, he can then progress to a home connection.0

I thought of that, too, especially as some libraries run free courses on how to use the internet.0 -
A tablet will also require a 3G connection, unless you pay the extra for a 3G tablet.
If his interest is in doubt, better to get a 3G PAYG service than a landline, as many line rental contracts are 12m minimum term.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Laptops available from under £170. MiFi unit from £30. So can be up and running with Internet for £200 in total.0

But there will be the cost of data on top of that, maybe £10 per month. No free lunch, and no free laptop

I quite agree, try him on PAYG first before signing him up to any longer term committment. No free lunch, and no free laptop

For a oversized Tablet, there is the 21.5" screen of the ACER DA220HQL for £169.98
Can double as a monitor too.
