    I've heard lots of people where we live say that aerials don't work here but that was a while ago.

    Check with a local professional installer and you'll be advised correctly.

    Cheaper than going anywhere near big aerials or aerial installers would be a Humax Foxsat HDR - an HD Freesat recorder. They're old now (I've got one) but all they miss out on is the new stuff that you would need to connect to a network for. Look on eBay or Gumtree. If you can afford a <freetime> box (and Humax refurb store will have some cheap) then you can add the integrated catch up stuff that people have got used to.

    Why not ask your neighbour? Sounds like you are simply in a low point that requires a longer aerial pole than standard.
    But as above, you don't need an aerial if you don't have one, the Freesat PVR's are around the same price as the Freeview ones and will give you almost exactly the same channels via your existing dish.
    For as little as £129: that's about 5 Sky subs.
