MilleniumTalk cancellation

Hi there. Long story about this...company
My broadband was with a now-defunct company called CF1Telecom and were always very nice to me. Signed up with them for a 1 year contract in Jan 2010 and rolling after that.
Fastforward to Apr/May 2014 MilleniumTalk bought over CF1 and broadband went as usual, no extra payments, same great speed, no issues.
I'm in the process of moving so I phone asking about an address change (New house is 5mins up the road from my current location) and the guy said £99&VAT. I was shocked. I phone up a few days later, ask the same questions and this time I'm quoted £60&VAT.
So I signed my new place up with talktalk.
I phoned MT today asking to cancel and was quoted £89.99&VAT.
I told the guy it's a rip-off and robbery so I went straight to my bank and got the Direct Debit cancelled.
Those kind of amounts to change address or cancel?? Doesn't sound right to me.
Your thoughts please
I'd appreciate it.

I don't think you should have cancelled the Direct Debit with your Bank until you gave notice to cancel with your provider...0

How much notice did you give? I see £89.99 referenced if you don't give the required notice period.
Also, was it a business line or residential?0 -
When I switched address before, when still with CF1, I was not charged 1 penny.
These guys are new on the scene to me, so I was naturally iffy from the get-go. With all these quotes I've been given, I think they're a bunch of cowboys.
I suppose technically I didn't sign up with them. The sheet I have in front of me only says my account number, login details and configuration settings. No mention of notice periods, contract length and the like.0 -
I don't know of any broadband provider that doesn't have a notice period, with a charge being applied for any time in that notice period for which the service is not taken.
Could the charge for a move include the need for a new line ? This would be the case if the new premises have had only Virgin or even no phone line.0 -
^ I am not sure at all. What I know is that TALKTALK are just reactivating the line, I set up then all will be good. Even if they have a little extra charge for the line reactivation, I'm sure it won't be between £60-£90!
EDIT - The people that ran CF1 I know personally. They said they never got me onto a contract0 -
UPDATE: I cancelled the Direct Debit to these Indian cowboys. They wanted to be A-holes and demanded £90-£100 to "cancel".
I do the jokes0 -

You better hope they don't trash your credit rating for non-payment. That's certainly not a joking matter!0 -
What is the £90 for? Is it a simple cancellation charge or is it payment in lieu of notice? Also what did your ORIGINAL contract with CF1 say about cancellation charges?
The basics of it are that Millennium can only hold you to your original T&C (that includes cancellation charges and notice periods) unless you have formally agreed a new contract with them. They cant take over your account then decide they can charge you what they want to leave. Its simply not legal. I would ask them for a letter or email explaining their final position and refer it to the ombudsman.0
