My course is subsidised by the council but its the only one in the whole of South Wales and the fee is going up 50% in September. I know the distance learning ones are around £1K....You're not your * could have not of * Debt not dept *0

Oh, come in and welcome, SC!
I didn't realise those two pieces weren't cross stitch, so you've educated me there.:p
Yes, C&G stuff can cost a fortune, but occasionally, local colleges have better priced classes.
Have you done any of those stitches on plainweave fabric? Or are they all on evenweaves? Just curious.Elizabeth

I've also done part 1 C&G embroidery- now long ago. Did it over 2 years (or was it three??) at evening classes. It was pretty intense but very interesting. Lots of counted thread work (as seen in the lovely examples above) and traditional stitches and then free machine embroidery and loads of experimental stuff- dyeing, spinning etc (things way outside the traditional notion of embroidery.) Plus all the sheets of design work .
I still have all the projects , somewhere in the house! Went on to use some unused whitework things for a project in a ND Craft design course, and the design ideas and very creative sewing for A level art & craft.
Actually hate cross stitch!! These days I am more inclined to experiment on the machine... it grows more quickly!!
If you get a chance to see the final exhibition of the C&G students at a local college it is quite an eye opener and will send you away with some great starter ideas.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Misunderstanding there!- Sweetcarer has some beautiful counted thread designs- the "twisted band sampler" shown above. I think I only did very small counted thread samples to prove that I had learned how! One of the styles I think is fascinating is blackwork- all that intricacy just from a straight stitch, but of course it is what you do with the stitches !Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Hi Girls,
Another band done (no. 10) done in the twisted band sampler - this contained satin stitch, rhodes stitch and the new one - tied windmill.
So here is (mostly) all together
and here is the close up
Better get on with my learning sampler - bit behind with it (due to doing baby stitch and engagement stitch) - having trouble with queens stitch - asked the designer for advice but its because of the material I am using - so have decided to do a version of queens - or ½ queens as I am calling them - will post picture later.
Kind wishes to all
