Problems with HD Digital TV Recorder

I have a Goodmans HD Digital TV recorder which my Son gave me last Christmas
Everything was working but this past couple of weeks when I try to play something back it won't start it just goes to playing now but nothing happens.
Also sometimes when I then take it back to TV it shows the channel but it won't play either
I then close it down and open it up again and it may or may not work it is taking a great deal of time to start.
I thought perhaps that I had too many programmes recorded so yesterday I deleted a lot of them Again sometimes it will delete but other times nothing happens and as it is frozen I have to switch it off to get rid of this message.
Any idea of what the problem might be It is obviously still under guarantee being 6 months old Would appreciate suggestions.
I also have Samsung smart TV so resort to it when the TV is not working through the recorder.
Many thanks
Sue

If it was only purchased last Christmas (assuming your son didn't just pass this on to you), it's still under warranty. Get your son to return it to the retailer who sold it to him.
Goodmans is budget brand, I'm afraid and you only get what you pay for..0 -
Not sure where he bought it from but he lives in Northern Ireland so not easy to return it he may well have bought it from Amazon as he often does I suppose I can ask him.
Thanks anyway He has 3 young daughters so money is not that flush and I am very happy with any gift that he gives me.

I'm sure you'll be able to arrange an exchange or return before the warranty runs out...0 -
Sorry I do appreciate what you are saying. Had I bought it myself I would have spent a bit more to buy a better product. Thanks again Sue0

You don't need to return it to the same branch, you just need proof of purchase and use your local branch, assuming bought via a national chain.
If Amazon, get him to generate you a returns label and send it to you. Courier will then pick up.
Or return it direct to Goodmans under the warranty. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
The recorder stopped working completely and as I was going over to Ireland I took it with me I had spoken to Goodman's and they said to return it to retailer My Son obtained a refund and I am now going to buy a new unit As has been said on here what I had was a budget brand What advice would you give me and what sort of price would I pay for a better brand I am happy to spend the extra money to get what is reliable and a better product
When the unit stopped working I read reviews on it and they were without exception very poor mostly 1 * or warning not to buy
Would appreciate advice on this

Select something from the better known brands like Humax, Sony, or Panasonic.0

Thanks for the suggestions Will have a look and see what is out there I am happy to pay more to get a better brand
Thanks again

Unless you have a good reason to do otherwise, a Humax YouView box is the best. You can go cheaper if you really don't want the catch-up stuff or can't connect it to the internet, but I think the better user interface makes it worthwhile anyway since they've become so much cheaper.0

Thanks for the information My understanding is not clear I have a Samsung Smart TV since I was given the Digital DVD recorder I had the Goodman's that was a gift I could record 2 programms and also play back while recording someone said I need twin something or other I have just had a quick look and there are a lot of players out there I have a sony Bluray player and an old video which I would only be used to play old family video
The one you are suggesting seems to be various models but not sure what I need to meet my needs I have talk talk broadband and phone but don't really don't want to buy a tv package from them I want the recorder to be able to say record a film for viewing later and to be able to record programmes when I am out rather than use ITV iplayer or BBC iplayer I do use these but more often than not I use the DVD player. I would be really happy if someone could suggest what would meet my needs
Again many thanks Sue0
