Dog Food

Cant quite decide what forum this would fit best in so sorry if its in the wrong place.
I currently buy my dog Burn Puppy Food, she has this because I wanted to buy here a high quality food that nots packed full of cerials and other
rubbish thats no good for a dog that a lot of brands seem to have. I'm happy paying what I do, its roughly £44 for a bag that last 56 days (arpoxx 80p a day). This is supplimented by a little meat and a dentastick (another 25p or so) I was just wondering if anyone had come accross any "premium" style complete foods (ie the burns stuff) that is cheaper than this? I'm not looking to buy her lower quality food as I'm very happy with her general health, energy and coat etc on this food, so I would be looking for another "brown rice + meat" combination. Any suggestions welcome.

Hi Paul - is this what you're feeding?
http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dry_dog_food/burns/burns_puppy/339856?gclid=CjwKEAjw9LKeBRDurOugs43jnlgSJACUXqHxqj9rufJXwXFZna9PmXBsgmhDLZHH8uohiaUJOkSwqBoCmvjw_wcB#composition
If so, there's a fair bit of cereals in I'm afraid
Contains:
Chicken Meal (30%), Brown Rice (21%), White Rice (21%), Oats, Peas, Chicken Oil, Beet Pulp, Sunflower Oil, Seaweed, Vitamins & Minerals.
Personally I have nothing against rice but I know a lot of people do - over 40% rice is a lot in a food though
Better foods around for the price IMHO - eg Arden Grange, Purizon. If you can stretch a bit more initially Millies Wolfheart is an excellent food & you'll find you need to feed less of it so it balances out in costs to the others
If you add high quality wets (eg Nature Menu - pouches & tins, Lukullus - pouches & tins, Rocco Sensible etc) then the kibble doesn't have to be absolutely top of the range
Also, you don't need to feed a specific puppy food .....Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
2016 Sell: £125/£250
£1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!0 -
I coudn't agree more about Millies Wolfheart, mine have been on the countryside mix for some months now & I can't fault it.. the pup is also on it & doing great.
Countyside Mix Composition:
Fresh Lamb (min. 20.1%), fresh duck (min. 20.1%), duck meal (min. 17.4%),
sweet potato( 12.39%), potato flakes (12.39%), lamb meal (min. 4.7%), rabbit meal (min. 3.4%),
duck fat(3.35%), pea fibre(1.81%), lucerne(1.47%), vitamins and minerals(1.34%), lamb gravy(1.24%), dried apple(0.03%), carrot flakes(0.03%), spinach flakes (0.03%), lovage powder(0.03%), seaweed meal(0.03%), dried cranberry(0.03%), aniseed and fenugreek(0.03%) , mixed herbs (thyme, marjoram, oregano, parsley, sage) (0.03%), glucosamine (min. 0.01%), MSM (min. 0.01%), chondroitin sulphate (min. 0.01%), camomile powder(0.01%), burdock root powder(0.01%), peppermint(0.01%), dandelion herb(0.01%)
No cereals or grains at all & £49.99 for 14.5 kg doesn't break the bank either.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
Try https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk - you can search by budget (cost per day/month as opposed to by bag, which can give an inaccurate cost due to the variance in volume you feed) and ratings0

Our dog is currently eatin taste of the wild, the ingredients for his are in the link below, struggling to copy so much on my phone.

Thanks for the replies.
rising from the ashes - Yes that's the one. It was recommended by our vet and I had already read a few positive reviews prior to that, with regards to the rice, I though that was good for their digestion? The price isn't too important, I mostly want whats best for her, but this being MSE I want the best for the least! :P
As for mixing wet foods in, thats not an option for general feeding as my other half is repulsed by the smell (she's got a very weak stomach!) so the "meat" tends to only be fed when I feed her or as a "treat" now and then.
I'll defiantly look into local suppliers and prices of Taste of the Wild and coun countryside mix and the allaboutdogfood website looks superb, defiantly a lot more research needed!
Thanks all!

We feed our dog Arden Grange, they will send you a variety of samples if you contact them. We had him on a BARF diet prior to this, he's doing much better with AG.0

I feed Fish4Dogs working dog, which is exactly the same as the dearer version, but sold VAT free in plain packaging.
It isn't cheap, but it has a high percentage of fish (You can feel the oil when you handle it and smell it a mile away) and no cereal. I buy 3 sacks, when on offer, so get the reduced price plus 15% off for spending over £100. This is just for two cavaliers, but it has a long use by date.0 -
Have you looked at Orijen? Since you say price does not matter - I doubt you can find anything better than Orijen:

I do know Fish4Dogs changed their formulation a while back and know a lot of people who've had problems with the new one
Another to consider is Wainwrights (available from Pets at Home)
- about £40 for 15kg so great value & decent ingredients (I'd forgotten about it as the fish one is potato so no good for us)
Ben, my old Lab, did really well on the Turkey & Rice one for yearsGrocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
2016 Sell: £125/£250
£1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000

adandem - where do you contact them to receive free samples?
teddysmum - Where do you purchase it from for the 15%? I'm very happy to buy in bulk assuming the shelf life is long enough, storage is not an issue at all.
gettingready - Shes a 7 Month old Border Collie (Non Working - However does attend Agility classes twice a week and has at LEAST an hour a day walks (usualy more!) She currently weeights about 13kg
rising from the ashes - Wainwrights is what we fed her when we first had her, it didn't agree with her, might be worth trying again now she's a bit older though!
Thanks again all, much appreciated.0
