New Malden is a perfectly decent, if pretty anonymous, sort of place. There's a pretty good pub there, The Royal Oak, and they even had a proper sit down Wimpey there until recently! Certainly no crime problems or anything. There are loads of places like that around London and further out.0 -

They have a God given right to a 3-bed penthouse within walking distance of Piccadilly Circus, preferably on the UK median wage and without too much compromise on essential travel to Magaluf, Aya Napa and Vegas. Like we did when we were young.Don't blame me, I voted Remain.0 -

Don't get me wrong, I understand the arguments for being central (no annoying and expensive commute, can put in longer hours and get ahead, more fun) but unless you've got a generous parent or 2 then you have to cut your cloth according to your means. That or borrow a load of money like my mate and hope you get rich........which he did!!!0 - 
            I think there's a niche book that could be written on: good places to live in London that don't cost an arm and a leg. Those who've never been would find it invaluable when planning a move there.
Aim it at under 25s off to the smoke for the first time to work ...... market it through student sites/bodies. Rake it in.0 -

It's not a flat. It's not a house. It's a ROOM.
For £100 PER WEEK.
The £100 price tag might sound cheap. it might give the ability to say "look, you CAN live in London if you accept a room and a longish commute each day and still pay out the equivalent of renting a flat or even a house in other areas of the country...and to top off the luxuries, they even have a whimpey, the dredge of all burger joints!".
I get what you are saying - it's do-able. If you are single, and are happy to live in a single room and spend a lot of your time commuting to work.

It's a house share. You don't tend to live in your room. You have access to the rest of the house if you wish. Most of the time you'll be away anyway. It's not 'living in a single room'. You know this.

I know, mostly, I don't. They're annoying and some are selfish - and I can't function when others are around.... e.g. I'd have to be up at 5am so I knew I'd be able to get into the shower .... and I'd eat sandwiches bought from shops as they'd be in the kitchen, or have dumped saucepans in the sink etc. I tried a house-share .... she was an escort, with 6 boyfriends... and the morning after she'd gone out and got drunk with her footballer boyfriend she'd thrown up all over the bathroom, so I had to cross my legs and get dressed/drive 20 miles to work in order to use a loo.
Sharing doesn't match personalities/types - it's a random bunch of people who needed a room when there was one advertised - and a lot of people are simply annoying and selfish.0 -

Your potentially being too selective when you first enter the market.
This is how agents can feed over your naivety.
If I were to move to London in this climate, I'd be prepared to lower my expectations and "get a foot in the door", sharing, commuting etc so I could get better knowledge of the market and position myself so I was not fleeced by such inflated costs.
Again, this links into accepting what is presented instead of knowing the market and positioning yourself accordingly.
If I had no insight into an area and the market was as red hot as people are portraying, I'd make sure that I choose a least financially impacted property / location to allow myself to get on top of my local market knowledge.
There are plenty of commutable / share-able properties out there.
It's nice to be called naive and have someone who admits they know very little about the London market tell me I need to know more about the market when I spent almost the whole period from 1997-2014 renting places all across London, including lodging, living in shared houses and renting my own places across all six zones.
I don't disagree with your central premise that if you are prepared to compromise very heavily you will always be able to find somewhere, but some of the statements you are making are just born out of your own naïvet! and lack of knowledge of the london market.0 -

It was a cheap rental in London to allow someone to relocate to the area.
I did a quick google map search of the road and it didn't look that bad.
I also found this 4 double bed rental which if shared would be relatively cheap for London.
