Meanwhile, back in the real world, you need to move, to a specific area, with a specific budget and finally found somewhere to move to, that 20 other people also viewed ...... there's no easy way to find/reach private landlords.
You can question them, but as there are tons of others willing to just bang a wedge of cash on the desk, by the time you've pontificated you've missed it.

There are always options.
What your alluding to is a lack of awareness of the market.
I'd suggest that instead of that reactive approach you refer to a far more pro-active approach is required.:wall:

To follow up on my previous response to this post, I have not researched London, however a quick 5 minute google search has identified a number of options that would allow one to get into town, get settles, get to know the market better before making the next step.PasturesNew wrote: »Meanwhile, back in the real world, you need to move, to a specific area, with a specific budget and finally found somewhere to move to, that 20 other people also viewed ...... there's no easy way to find/reach private landlords.

There are loads and loads of house and flat shares in London. I shared for years before Mrs Generali came along and I made life-long friends with many of my cohabitees (and a few life-long enemies I suspect but not so many of the latter!). You can rent a place for buttons if you do it right.
We rented a massive if rather run down 4 bed house in West Norwood. IIRC, we were paying about £50-60/week and this place was huge! The LL wasn't much into doing things although he'd do the plumbing, gas and electrics. We were paying so little in rent that we were happy to do a few extras ourselves. It was a pretty unusual set-up I grant you and probably illegal then let alone now.0 -
            1 bedroom flat share?
So you share a bedroom?
You do realise there's a shortage of housing?
How else do you expect it to be rationed if not through price?
Prices and rents will rise until sufficient people are excluded or forced to share as to equalise supply and demand. That's how markets work...“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

There are many solutions beyond craming people into single bedrooms. There are more empty bedrooms in london, then their are people.0 -

There are more empty bedrooms in london, then their are people.
No, that is not correct.
There are more bedrooms in London than there are people, and some of those bedrooms are empty, kept as spare, used for offices, recreational activities, etc.
But there are not more empty bedrooms than people.
Besides, the relevant statistic is not how many bedrooms there are, but how many bedrooms there are available.... So unless you expect an awful lot of rich people to be taking in lodgers any time soon, it's of little relevance how many spare bedrooms there are.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

Why is it so cheap in London??
I was in a house share 2 years ago at £500/month.
I thought London was expensive? (Never been, don't know the place... but I hear people always saying it's expensive).0
