Best pay as you go bundle, no data needed?

Just got my son his first mobile, it doesn't have any internet access just phone and text. Which network offers the best payg tariff for this? I've searched and can't find anything without data.

Ideally I'd have liked him to be able to call me in an emergency if he ran out of minutes, which I think one network advertised years ago. But none seem to do that now (and I'm on EE).

Thanks

Why does he need a bundle every month.

Why not just top up £10 and let him use up the credit.

The best PAYG tariff for occasional usage is Three 3-2-1
3p/min; 2p/text. The phone has to be 3g.

I've just joined giffgaff. Although I've bought a bundle which includes data, I did briefly peruse their call and text charges which looked very reasonable.

giffgaff's bundles all seem to include data but other networks I think offer call and text packages. Tesco was my previous provider and I paid £5.00 a month for 5000 texts. Tesco also offer ping a pound meaning you could ping a pound to your son's phone.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned so far is to check the network coverage in the areas he will mainly be. He can do this by asking friends and by obtaining free SIM's to try.

There is no point in settling for a PAYG service that gives him poor coverage no matter how cheap. Once he's done this and eliminated which networks are unsuitable the choice will be easier.

How about giffgaff, they offer a plan called "Hokey Cokey", you get 60 mins to any network, 300 sms and 20mb of data for £5 a month.

As you're on EE whenever you ring your son he would get a minute of call time back for every minute that you're on the phone to him (minimum of 1 minute).
