Line Rental Question

Quick question,

Signed up to BT Broadband on an 18 month contract last year, and paid for line rental saver up front for 12 months.

Line rental saver is due to expire soon, so I looked into renewing it - BT want £160, but the Post Office only want £120.

Can I transfer just the line rental to the Post Office without affecting my broadband contract?

I've no interest in switching from BT for broadband - and even if I could I'm still under contract anyway.

I believe you have to take BT's line to have the broadband.
  • I think if you take the line rental away from BT, you might see an increase in the price of the broadband. From what I've checked, BT's prices for broadband only are higher unless you have your services paired together.

I signed up with another provider that was willing to cover my early cancellation fees up to £100, so just have a look to see if maybe the Post Office would be willing to do so.

Try to cut a retention deal with BT instead? Or wait 6m and transfer both services when your broadband min term expires.

I should point out I'm unlikely to transfer the broadband away from BT - I'm on an ADSL (not ADSL2) exchange with no LLU operators - I use ~300GB per month and BT are by far the cheapest (only?) properly unlimited ISP.

If you take your line rental away from BT and you are still within your minimum term with your broadband and calls bundle then BT will start you on a new contract for broadband only which will be 12 or 18
    months.
BT will allow you to renew your broadband contract when you are in the last 3 months of your minimum term and at a reduced price.

If i were you i would wait until you are at that point and then request a MAC via BT live chat on BT.com

The best price BT offer on unlimited broadband is £6.65 a month for 12 months. But you will have to persevere to get that deal.

Oooo, any more info on that?

Current plan is £16pm, 6 months free, 18 months contract - which is £10.66pm amortised.

2 ways to get the £6.65 deal.

    1. Fill in the online request a MAC on BT.com and wait for the reply. The reply will come with an offer to stay with BT and remember requesting a MAC does not cancel your service. If the offer is not £6.65 then reply and say you want the £6.65 offer.

    2. Call 0800 800 030 option 1 and state you were offered unlimited broadband for £6.65 and want to take up the offer. You will probably be passed about all over BT but persevere and you will get it.

You have to be in the last 3 months of your minimum term to get any retention offers.

I think you will find that Plusnet (to name just one BT reseller) will always be cheaper than BT. All their current tariffs are unlimited. And there are dozens of others to choose from: BT are invariably among the most expensive.

Not all PlusNet deals are unlimited and they do slow the connection down. Also note there is a price increase on land lines in September which they have just informed me of after signing with them last month, they did not tell me that when I upgraded! Now I have to start looking again for another provider.

They have us all over a barrel with the line rental they can increase it as much as they want because without a line you cannot get BB unless in a cabled area.

Incorrect: all current Plusnet broadband tariffs are unlimited.

How would they have necessarily known about the price increase at the time of sign up? The tier 1 call centre staff are informed of price rises just before they are announced to the public.
