Yes, I'm sure once the miscreants had been identified by the police they could have been brought before the judge who could have dealt with them for criminal contempt, no need for a charge of perverting or attempting to pervert the course of justice, nor a decision by the CPS or a separate trial.
The judge could not try them for contempt of his court. That would be a breach of Article 6 ECHR as he could not be considered to be independent and impartial - see Kyprianou v Cyprus0 -

ASide from which, it wasn't contempt of court in any case, as the person what's before the court or subject to it's orders.
It would have been Perverting the Course of Justice, and would be tried by a Red judge in a real Crown Court with a jury.0
