Is it worth the money for me to upgrade to fibre?

Hi, would love your advice.

I am with BT and currently have 4mbps speed. I have found out that i can get fibre broadband and can expect 9 mbps.

I expect this to cost about £10 extra per month, but am unsure whether it is worth the money. We will be streaming netflix, and general browsing.

Anyone have any views on whether i should upgrade considering the cost.

Thank you.

Does your current connection support all you want todo or do you sometimes find it frustrating?

For instance do you find yourself waiting for something you are downloading to complete? Do you need to wait before streaming something because someone else is already streaming someting else or maybe downloading?

Fibre will allow you to run multiple streams while also downloading. It will speed up downloads. It will speed up any uploads (e.g. photos to the cloud). It won't make browsing noticeably faster. If those things sound useful do they sound £10 a month useful?

Thanks. I don't actually have netflix yet. Waiting for sky to run out. So i guess it boils down to whether netflix will perform adequately with 4mbps or if i would benefit (£10 per month benefit) by getting 9mbps.

Then I'd wait and see how if performs on ADSL first...4MBps should enable streaming from iPlayer etc perfectly adequately.

9Mbps on FTTC thats appalling, I'd expect at least 30Mbps to justify the extra cost, is the nearest cabinet over a mile away then?

BTW Have you done everything you can to optimise your connection, i.e Router in the Master socket, bell wire removed from any extensions, check router line statistics?
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I get about 4 mpbs and have no problems streaming Lovefilm, Iplayer Youtube etc on both my Smart TV and Laptop. I think the deciding factor is the number of people in the house accessing the connection at the same time.

Hi Penrhyn. Yes I am about a mile away from the cabinet and the router is plugged into the master socket (nothing else is). Its a downside of living in the countryside.

TBH browsing is generally fine, so if I won't notice any major difference i am probably best putting the £10 per month away towards a new TV

Hi Daniel, Your not allowed BT Infinity below 15Mbps. BT can offer 'superfast BB' instead. You would need to enquire how much that is.
