Tyre Options

Hi,

My car manual gives three options for tyres:

145/80 R 13-75T
165/70 R 13-79T
165/65 R 14-78T

All I am looking for is a cheap, all weather durable pair of rear tyres.
Why are there so many options!

Thanks

First of all check the size of the tyres you have - if you have the 14" ones - you have no choice.

The first listed 145/80 would be considered pretty narrow these days and the 165/70 ones would probably last longer - having more rubber on the road.

    Replace like with like.

Use the internet to compare costs.

Have just found out my local preferred shop is a Mytyres depot. Might explain why they are cheaper than both Blackcircles amd Mytyres on occasion.

I would personallg avoid Chinese tyres but have had decent experiences with Indonesian tyres that were on a car when purchased, Korean tyres and Japanese tyres(Toyo).

I always find Continentals wear quickly but only had them on the Clio.

Dunlop Bluperformance have been great, Hankook of some description lasted well and had some Avon ZV3 which were good.

Money no object i would go Michelin or Dunlop/Goodyear.

It isn't really true that Chinese tyres are true ditch finders as in years gone by.

But they will never match a premium tyre overall.

    You pays your money etc.

I have noticed an improvement i fuel economy since fitting the Blueresponse tyres to the Clio.

Not huge. Was doing 52mpg and now shows 57mpg it is reset rarely.

The tires on the back at the moment are crumbling on the entire sidewall. Hence the emergency low cost tyre being required.

Could this be down to the size on there at the moment?
I've just had a look at the last garage must have ripped me off?
    They've put on 165/65 R 79T.

    They're all very narrow indeed.

    OP

    Take a look here:

    http://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?width=165&aspect=65&diameter=14&wheelwidth=4&offset=0&width2=185&aspect2=60&diameter2=14&wheelwidth2=4&offset2=0#content

Have a bit of a play, you can change the width and profile, so long as the total diameter is within say 10mm, you'll be fine.
This will give you more options for sizes and maybe a cheaper size option.

I used the above tool recently, I went from 185/60 R14 to 195/55 R14, because high performance tyres are so very hard to find for 14" wheels.

What brand are these tyres - and how old are they.

Tyre only 'crumble and perish if they are pretty old and / or have been exposed to the sun for a very long time.

To get the true age look at the DOT Code on the tyre side-wall - there will be an oval section at the end with 4 numbers - what are they?

Why have they ripped you off? You can't put a 13" tyre on a 14" rim.

Sounds like you have 14" wheels so they have fitted the correct size tyre.

Why not give us a fighting chance and tell us what the tyres currently are, the car, the last time the tyres were changed etc.

Most of the on line tyre dealers have a box to enter vehicle details, which will come up with the correct fitments for your car. I'm surprised that your handbook lists 3. What car and model is it and what size have you currently.

I've had good service and very good prices from my local Formula one centre. They will price beat other on line sites, too.

Personally for budget brands, I'd avoid the lesser known makes.

You could go for Avon or Uniroyals being good value and well respected brands.

    Can't agree on Avon tyres.

Were the cheapest non budget tyre when i fitted them to our Clio.

Lasted well and were safe in all conditions.

Not as good as the Dunlops now on there but they were a bit more expensive but had the money to spare so why not likely to keep it for another year or so.
