A couple of minutes later they came over and said all their beers were tasting bad so they think something went wrong with the line cleaning they'd done overnight and offered to replace the pint with two bottles at no extra charge - though subsequent drinks would be charged at actual price

Maybe the glasses still had cleaning fluid on them from the dishwasher - that would taint all the drinks?

Had a bad pint the other day, think its my first one ever. Went to the bar and they immediately offered to change it to something else before even tasting it themselves and said they'd bring it over to the table.

Never worked in a pub but would have thought you tested the beer after cleaning the lines to make sure its all ok but evidently not.

To the OP - your rights with beer is the same as any other product you buy in store. You are entitled to reject the goods if they are defective and the onus is on the merchant to prove they werent defective.

Obviously in the real world enforcing your rights is difficult if the merchant rejects your claim that they are defective. If it was a more substantial product then you'd retain it, get it tested to prove the defect by an expert and then return and litigate if they still dont accept it. For the sake of a pint though just chalk it up as an experience and vote with your wallet

When I worked in the pub, we cleaned the lines using a type of bleach. I don't think it was caustic soda but I forget what it was. We ran it through and then ran a hell of a lot of fresh water through. Once the water was coming out clean. The first pint would be poured away (or drunk by a eager staff member).

It's possible they didn't flush enough water through if all the lines were bad (common mistake with someone inexperienced).

No, the bottled drinks were poured into a glass and that was fine, likewise my friend who had a pint of coke without problems.

They also tried the other taps with different glasses so would be a bit of bad luck that they all were contaminated where as the others for my 2nd drink and the coke werent.

I'm guessing something like that. I was also surprised that by 12:30 I was the first person to have a draught drink in the City. The place admitidally was very quiet but by no means empty. Though the did refuse everyone else after me any draught

Bad that it happened but handled in a professional manor and whilst its unfortunate that it made the 2nd drink more expensive than it would normally have been at least they did give two bottles to compensate for a bad pint.

Wasn't 'Sterret' was it? Drank half a pint of the stuff when not looking and the barmaid didn't notice either. Nasty stuff but cleared me out too.
