Tank was nearly empty on both of these occasions, which were weeks apart..

Esso Fuel station (Unleaded - normal)
    Price of fuel = 127.9p/L
I put £35 worth of fuel,
and it made the tank get
    half filled up.

Then another time, (when the tank was nearly empty)

    Total Fuel station (Premium unleaded)

Price of fuel = 133.9p/L (much more expensive than above!)
    I put £20,
    Tank was half filled up.

    Car:
    Peugeot 406,Saloon car,
Petrol, Year 2000, Engine Size (CC): 1761

So the total price of fuel was more expensive, yet it filled up the tank the same as the cheaper one, (which had almost twice as much ££ worth of fuel?)

Why when Half the price of fuel is put with a station which has a 'higher price' per litre, why is the tank filled the to the approx same level in both cases?

You've uncovered a con by the petrol retailers. Its how they make their billions per year - by putting less fuel in than it says on the pump. Its not widely known, but trolls actually run the petrol companies, and they employ pixies to do their dirty work at the pump. Sometimes the pixies inside the fuel pump take out too much and people notice.

Obviously if you were to take this up with the fuel companies they will deny everything.

Personally, i've found that the pixie in pump 3 on a tuesday night at my local Tesco station sticks a bit of extra diesel in my car, so i always go there.

Because of the additives premium unleaded is larger per litre than standard unleaded. Hence the difference in the fuel level.

I was going to say because it was hotter when you put the 2nd lot in so the fuel had expanded more :)

Thats not as crazy as it seems. It is going to expand in temperatures like today, so you would get morefor your money by filling upearly morning, after a cooler night.
Im sure some clever mse will be able to tell us how much temperater variation would cause noticable expansion.

There haven't been any Total garages in the UK for a couple of years - they pulled out of the UK fuel retail market and sold all their sites to other brands.

So maybe it was all a dream!

I was certain i drove past a Total station last week.

    They certainly aren't common.

But didn't think they had pulled out completely.

As far as the OP goes.

    Not really scientific.

A troll or not a troll?

    Who knows for sure?
