Praise to B&Q. I bought the wrong radiator valve last week, and couldn't find my receipt. No fuss though, they just looked up the transaction and refunded me anyway.

I think that in the end, it all comes down to a couple of things.
1/ The store staff on duty at the time but more importantly,
2/ How you actually speak to the staff and put your request across.
As the old saying goes:

The best one I know is costco. I don't bother even keeping the receipts because on the odd occasion I've had to take something back, they just look it up on their system (every purchase is logged against your membership number).0 -
I took a water butt back to homebase it was several months old and had split I couldn't find the receipt but they exchanged it no trouble at all, the replacement has lasted years.0

Thank you for praising Good Customer Service! It's too rare Anywhere, but here is extra special!
I heard a woman bought a printer from Costco & had the purchase refunded in full when the company stopped making toner refills for it. I'd love to believe it, but since I'm not sure of the source, I stick with it being very possible.0 -
The benefit of Go Outdoors membership scheme means you don't need a receipt as all transactions are against your membership number.0

Same with Tesco if you use your clubcard or pay by card, the transaction can be looked up on the back office system. I had to do this many times when I used to work there.0

I had an [expensive] christmas tree which worked well for a couple of years, but then the bulbs started to fail, and I could not find a source of replacement bulbs anywhere. Also the bulbs were almost impossible to remove. Costco refunded the money.
They still sold the tree so we had a look, and they'd updated it - the bulb design had changed, and a few other updates. We bought the new tree, which came with a huge bag of spare bulbs. They had obviously been listening to their customers and improved the product.0 -
ok bnq is not a builders merchant, but most builders merchants/trades type stores have very good customer services and flexible refund policies. Your average trademan spends tens of thousands at a store every year - and that's just the sole traders! So a little give one way will be reciprocated back the other way.0
