Where/how do you change nappies at night?

You do it quietly - or not at all.
Only poopy ones get changed, and they don't happen at night often.
If you take the nappy between your thumb and finger and 'pinch it' and roll it you can feel how wet it is. It is slidey where the absorby stuff has broken down if it is full of liquid - and squeaky dry if it's still clean.
I was changing the poor blighter every hour or so and spending a fortune until an older mum showed me - and I was throwing away unused nappies!
Poor babe barely got any sleep....
They are VERY absorbent, if you can leave well alone, leave well alone - and you can't feel if they are wet from the inside by puggling your fingers into them - because they are designed to stay dry (and that means dragging baby grows off in the night with lights on.)
Do as little as possible at night, as quietly as you can....0 -
OP where abouts are you? there maybe someone on here near to you who you could chat with?
i always changed babies on the bed. didnt do many night changes (unless they had pooed)
its all a minefield but you will find your own way through, you can never really fully plan for what you will do once baby gets here.0 -
I wouldn't change on the bed to start with... my daughter wee-d all over the change mat every time I took her nappy off for the first few weeks (the odd projectile poo wasn't unknown, either) and if I'd had to change my bedding as well as her clothes in the middle of the night I'd have been very upset;). That doesn't last very long, though, and then you can do it wherever feels easiest. As several posters have already said, you'll work it out as you go along.
Not sure when you're due (sorry if I missed that). Have you been offered NHS antenatal classes? I know cuts mean these are often going by the wayside, but ours were quite useful and we were all able to chat about this sort of thing together - and meet up after the birth. Also, you may be able to find a bumps-to-babies group in your area - sometimes children's centres run these. Forums are brilliant (much better than books), but there's no substitute for face-to-face contact.
Good luck!0 -
More often than not we just change him on a (big) towel on the bed and keep him as asleep as possible -but if trying not to disturb one or the other of me and my partner - due to early work start or whatever - and if he is a bit restless, then will take him downstairs and quickly change him downstairs with changing mat/towel.Debt Free 08/08/2014

Like most others here, I changed mine on a changing mat on the bed or floor.
To stop the fountain from boys, I kept a roll of loo paper with the other bits and tore off a square. When the nappy was opened, I popped the loo paper over sons willy. That soaked it up.0 -
You'll find a solution that works for you. We did night changes and night feeds in the baby's bedroom, even when he was sleeping in our room. I found feeding him sitting in a chair more comfortable than feeding him in bed and there wasn't room for the chair in our room along with the cot/Moses basket. My top tip for middle of the night nappy changes (if you're using disposables) is to get a nappy sack out of the packet and ready to use before you go to bed (and a nappy too) because fumbling around trying to open those things in the dark when you're half asleep is no fun. Obviously keep the bag out of the baby's reach.0

Change wherever and whenever. And if they sleep in the little zip-up sleeping bags you don't even have to take them out of it to change the nappy (helpful if baby has nodded off).0
