Thanks to those of you that helped with useful information and to those of you who make sarcy inaccurate comments...you shouldn't judge people so much. Wow. You see those sort of traits in people who troll and bully online just because its relatively anonymous.
If not, why not?0 -
I don't think what you want is possible on the cheap. You could try getting something like 3s MiFi. Not sure if they do it on a 4G network, if they do it will be fine for speed.
If Virgin is available they do 9 month student contracts.
I guess the best bet would be a low cost phone and BB deal. At around £20 PM it may be worth it, only you will know that.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

cheers onomatopoeia99 for your reply - yep the only relevance of the other property thing was that it felt a bit of a waste of £ getting a 12 month etc fixed broadband contract providing access all day every day when there's not someone there permanently using it much at the mo. Anyway it seems fixed broadband probably is the only option. I just wondered if people had any other ideas/tips. Conflicting requirements is right but they are pretty simple requirements and the only conflict is due to the rigidity of the service from providers - there ain't much flexibility there for the consumers.
wealdroam - thanks for your reply too - yep the only reason i can't seek out owners of already existing strong wifi signals is its in a new build development - the building is not quite finished yet. So no neighbours at all the moment.
cheers guys for helping out a newbie...cant' say i would come back here for advice due to the hostility of some responses earlier this evening. Eeek.0 -

As far as I can see, one person provided a slightly jokey response.0 -
If the property is in good mobile reception and can get decent speeds I would definitely look into mobile broadband, the download limits are much tighter than fixed lines but as it sounds like you're not going to be in the property that much I would think on cost it would still work out better. Plus you have the huge advantage that you'd be able to use the mobile broadband in other places as well.
A few of the streaming services now allowed downloads which you can then watch within a certain time period which you may be able to use to ease your bandwidth requirements when away.0 -
The problem the OP has is in their terminology of describing it as a 'second home'.
This is generally defined as a complete self contained property for the permanent sole use of the buyer on occasions, at holiday times and at weekends. At other times it remains totally empty.
These often raises people hackles as the saying goes, for the sorts of reasons we are all well aware of such as driving locals out by raising prices, removing homes from 100% occupancy, destroys communities if the % of homes used as second homes in the area is significant etc.
As such second homes are bought by people with shall we say money to spare. Then to come on to a moneysaving site declaring you have bought such a place and wanting to save a few quid is likely to get the precise reaction the OP got from at least one replier.
Perhaps if the OP had initially described their purchase reasons as they clarified later they might not have got the admittedly only single adverse reaction.0 -

What relevance is this 'second home' business to the question?
I feel very sad when people take the time and trouble to judge others when all they should be doing is looking at their own baggage.0 -
No relevance whatsoever but Paper Tiger just over reacted to what was, I'm sure, a light hearted comment with a good suggestion.
Tis after all an open forum and people have different views and levels of humour. Non of it was insulting and shouldn't really cause Tiger to miss the forums posts, eh?
For my input I would suggest waiting till their are other residents and then seeing if they would be happy to share, possible with the purchase of a powerline extender (it might just work in adjacent flats, only a few pound lost if not) and a mutual usage arrangement.
Given an unknown person (and perhaps taking in Tiger's touch response!) I doubt I would be inclined to share. Who knows what the other person might be downloading/sharing!0 -

Two of our five 'second homes'are in Snowdonia.
A company in Porthmadog (Porthmadog Computers) offered us a 'wireless broadband' system which was transmitted 'from afar', but only within 'line of sight'. We didn't use the service, but wondered about it slightly.
Is such a thing available in Southampton??0 -
Looks as though I should have plastered my mostly-sensible reply with smilies or put the work JOKE in somewhere!
And they say the Americans* have no concept of irony! :rotfl:
* if necessary, replace with name of nation you would prefer to insult!0
