I see you're one of those people who think they can't live without a dishwasher...
I suppose you can't live without Sky / Virgin Media / YouView too? :P

    .

I only have Freeview and don't have time to watch even that so have never paid for Sky etc. (although I did buy my very first box set a year ago (The Sopranos) and it took us nearly 6 months to get through it).

I just want more leisure time which is why I value a dishwasher.

I'm moving in September/October but I'm not a garden person (I have Molluscophobia which means I'm scared of slugs, have a cat too, so can't put pellets down), really I wanted artificial grass or slabs, another alternative would be spread egg shells everywhere then grow grass from seeds to make sure the slugs can't get to the turf, however none of this could be done if the garden is in the state you've just described.

What's the point having a lovely turf if I won't go anywhere near it? (once I lived in a house with garden and didn't go out not even once, my currently house is deck and I'm out every day as long as it's sunny enough)

My last house had a lawn and some decking and in the 6 years I was there I can bearly remember seeing a slug on the grass. There's nothing to attract them there. I did have about a million of them living under the decking though where it was cooler and damper and safer.

I value you my dishwasher too. Many years ago with 2 small children I timed how much time per day I spent washing dishes....2 hours! In the evening hubby spent time with the children and I was stuck at the kitchen sink. to be fair I did a lot of cooking, baked all our cakes and bread and all meals cooked from scratch.

Re turf, no way would I have grass in the garden now, maybe if I still had children at home I might consider it. When I moved into my new build house 2 years ago there was 12 inches of topsoil all raked flat apart from one area. The site manager asked if we wanted it, the raised area, levelling but he rememebred us saying we were going to have a rockery there so he left it raised but smoothed over.

I see the Sanctity of the Kitchen and moral crusade for kitchen labour party is present in this thread. Preferring to have a dishwasher? It's an outrage. You will go to hell.

Why should you have to if it is your choice not to? On the whole not having a dishwasher so you still have somewhere to put the mangle has its plus points.

Yeah, don't worry about it, my post was in jest, hence the :P
When I can afford one, and my kitchen space allows, it'll be 2nd of my list (first is a set of knives :D).

Np. I only got mine 5 years ago and almost didn't get it because I thought it was a waste of money and that I wouldn't use it, but as I was getting my whole kitchen refitted I thought that I might as well. Now I wouldn't be without one. Infact, if I won the lottery I would have two dishswashers so that I could put dirty dishes in one while the other one was on and so that I wouldn't have to empty it as soon as it was finished.

Get a dishwasher ( nice intergrated with matching door all fitted ) and artificial grass ! I could not do without mine ( other broke a year ago and Ive just got around to replacing it ) boy did we miss it - cutlery is MUCH more shiny from the dishwasher. Ive had my artificial grass 12 years - laid on prepared slab of concrete - it still looks fab :-) .... No slugs !

I wouldn't worry about £500. New builds are overpriced....
