Effect of Cat C/D Write-Off on Value?
Comments
-
Since the VIC appears on the V5C, there seems little point in not declaring the write-offs, wherever I advertise it.
You should be declaring it, because concealing 2 write-offs might lead to pretty unhappy buyers (and it's likely material enough for them to claim the money back from you).0 -
Interestingly, when I logged into Autotrader and put the reg in to create an ad, it automatically came up flagged as Cat C. Which tallies with the later declaration in August 2013.
Herzlos, i was not intending to conceal it (as it will be apparent as soon as the V5C is examined, which states 'Substantially repaired and/or accident damaged: identity checked on 11/3/14'), but my understanding is that in a private sale I have no legal obligation to do so. The only obligation is not to mislead or falsely describe. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

The type of car BMW 330Ci Coupe Auto, will attract mostly people who are after that particular marque and model, not the type that wake up one morning and think hmmm I fancy a car , it's a toss up between a Mazda 6 or BMW 330Ci Coupe Auto for example.
I couldn't say how cat C/D may affect the sale, for me I wouldn't touch one at any price, but others will consider them, especially at the age of the car , it's not huge sums.0 -
Given that it was an 11yo car when it was bent, it really wouldn't take very much damage at all to write it off. Possibly even just a bumper. For something aged and low-value, with such recent history, I'd have said it'd make fairly little impact on the value. If it'd had that exact same damage a year or two earlier, it'd have been repaired and gone unrecorded.0

That's exactly what I was thinking-which is why I was amazed that the auction house rated it down so low (to be fair, they haven't actually seen the car).No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
The auction house have to declare that it is on the register, small time dealers hear that and as they wont be able to offer it on finance to their BMW aspiring audience, they will all give it a miss. That leaves you with privateers, who will also run away if it is a Cat C, others wanting a coupe, wont want an auto and the rest will see a 330 with its fuel bills and £285 annual tax.
I would give you a pat on the back if you got anything close to £1000 for that car.0 -
A good clean 330Ci in a reasonable colour combo, rust free wheel arches, nice wheels and those miles is probably going to be worth £2495 to £2995, dependent on whether its an SE or a Sport, assuming it has some sort of history.
That would be consistent with autotrader prices if you look them up.

I sold three 01 330Ci's last year and they made between £2200-£2800. The £2200 one was a dark blue with cream leather SE.
If its otherwise a nice car, i'd be £1995ing it on gumtree and autotrader and see what happens. If the phone isnt ringing drop it back a bit, maybe to £1695.
I would have thought if its a reasonable car at all you should still get £1500 for it. There are still customers out for the 330Ci. Its a fantastic car.
Heres a fairly typically priced 2002 330CI with similar miles and a good history - your car would look like a steal for £1600 beside that.0 -

+1
My thinking exactly.
They're not a "phone rings off the hook" sort of car, but they do sell and they do make remarkably strong money - even rough ones.0 -

Thanks for your advice. It's an SE with leather seats. Appears to be in good bodily condition. However there is no service history at all. What I'm unclear about is what the implication of the above and the Cat C declaration is on the values you suggest? I originally thought around £1,500 before I found out that it was Cat C.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

What colour body and what colour leather?
Where they start to go first is the lip of the front wings and the rear wheel arches.
As i said earlier a nice one is going to be £2495, i would have thought yours should be an easy £1695 if you gumtree it.
Any scope to contact the previous owner RE: service history? Also try BMW UK to see what records they have? Any info you have will help.
Its not the end of the world at that price point anyway. As long as it has been looked after it should be fine.0
