do the electric/gas companies know when you moved in?

I have moved into a rental flat and there are bills belonging to 'the occupier' for months before me and they are asking for 1500 plus for gas and electric?
If i say i have just moved in - will they believe me?
I don't want to be lumbered with all the bills belonging to someone that has clearly run away without paying?
Really anxious as threatening letters
thanks

No, they are not psychic. That's why you are supposed to contact them on the day you move in, give opening readings and open an account. They will then bill you from that date. In some cases they may ask for a copy of your tenancy agreement to prove the start date.
Once you have an account, you are free to commence a switch.
It appears that the previous tenant never bothered to register.
Don't open the bills, return them marked 'gone away': they are nothing to do with you.No free lunch, and no free laptop

On the day your tenancy starts, you read the meter. You ring the companies. You tell them you are new occupier and give them the readings.
You will not be liable for any energy consumption before that date.
Any sensible landlord/agent will read the meters with you, and sign them off, in case of any dispute.0
