The only way to find out if the number can be ported is to place an order with a new provider before you cancel anything with Virgin.
They will contact Virgin to port the number and if it fails, then they should call you to check if you want to go ahead with a new number (at least this is what Sky do).
Normally number ports only fail if you have placed a cancellation order before you place your order (and number port) with the new provider.
The number port will result in you getting a letter from Virgin advising that telephone will be cancelled. You will still need to give notice on tv and/or broadband services.0
