Have been trying to move my TV, broadband and phone package from Virgin meda, only to be told that I can't take my old phone number of 40 years with me, as when I switched to them they brought the number rights. Surely this is a monopoly, as my phone number is connected to my business for as many years as I've had it. So I have no choice but to stay. Has anyone had any success moving from them and managed to take the phone no?

Would it really be detrimental to you to lose your telephone number?0

They have every right to purchase "your" number for their use. You can still choose to use another supplier, just not with that particular number, so hardly a "monopoly".
If your number is so important then stay with Virgin, it's not that much cheaper elsewhere.
In addition, you should probably not be using a domestic line for business purposes.0 -
I did not realise Virgin did this.
my mobile number has stayed with me for many years moving from vodaphone to orange to 02 why cant Virgin do the same with landlines
I was with BT for many years before transferring my number to Virgin .
I also work from home as a small business so would not be happy to lose the number we have used for over 30 years .
lots of self employed people use their domestic lines for business use as well as private calls.0 -

Some landline numbers can be 'ported to other suppliers, others cannot.
You really need to be paying the extra premium for a business line if you want the kind of service you demand. Complaining about a "monopoly" and about a domestic line not having the features of a business line is utterly futile.0 -

i am not demanding anything i am just commenting on this thread.
even without a small business i am sure most people would prefer to keep the number they have used for many years. as i said i did not know Virgin did refuse to transfer numbers,
when i transfered from BT 10 years ago I was not self employed, i work from home now, just as many plasterers, bricklayers, electricians, carpet fitters etc do
i am sure there is A Virgin Media rep that answers on the forum, maybe they can explain the reason why a number cannot be transferred, there could be a perfectly good explanation from Virgin, apart from wanting customers to stay with them0 -

do you work for Virgin Moneyineptitude?
how is it determined which numbers are reserved for cable especially if they originated from BT?
where have i said i expect any certain level of service either business or private? I have said i did not know that Virgin refused to transfer numbers whether that is all or some numbers, I won't find out until i want to move landline provider
can you explain the technical reason? other than reserved for cable.0 -

If you require a more specific official response to your query, I suggest you contact Virgin directly.
