What to do with old TVs?

What do people do with old TVs? I have one bulky one and one flat one but don't have a remote for it - do I just take them to the dump or is there a way to recycle them in some way?

Leave it on the front and the local scrappy will soon pick it up. Freecycle it..give it away to someone or keep it and use it as a spare. If there's nothing wrong with the flat screen I'd connect it up in a room and put it on Freeview. May be in the kitchen and have the news on.

Remote's aren't required. I don't even know where mine are I just use the old Sky remote to control the TV.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

If its useable try Freecycle or some larger charity shops sell them. Possibly Shelter or The British Heart Foundation. If you take it to a council tip it should be recycled properly.

They are useable but the big one won't work without a box as it's analogue.

I have enough TVs I don't need anymore unless I put it in the bathroom which seems a bit excessive!

Thanks for the advice. Noone seems to want anything on my freecycle - I put an exercise stepper up and got one reply which is all you need but I often put stuff up which is perfectly useable and noone replies

Try your local 'yourtown buy & sell' page on Facebook - there are loads where I live and very popular for selling bulky items.

Local Tip, you won't miss the special area, there are usually hundreds of the ancient things sitting there.

I watch mine! The most used set in the house is 35 years old.

But if you don't need it any more, how likely someone else will take it off you depends really.

If it's from before about 1980 and still works, it could be collectable and some are even quite valuable. Ones with funky designs or colours are usually desirable and often sell on eBay. Even the fairly common ones that tended to last well have a chance and people who just want a retro set for a low price will buy them. People buy them to watch, or for art projects, or props.

After about 1980, it just depends on the brand really. Good makes like B&O sell fairly consistently, although not for vast sums. I follow these as I like the early 80s models and would like another. People sometimes have to re-list a few times, but they tend to sell eventually. Certain models and makes also have specific fans. Sony for example made some sets in the 90s that are very desirable for people who are in to retro games consoles.

Your best bet is to list it on eBay with the full model number and ideally a photo of it running, and see what happens. If it's a decent set and the start price is low enough, you'll probably find someone who wants it. Whatever you have, it's probably worth trying a 99p-make-it-go-away listing on eBay.

Doubt very much you will be able to sell them.

Locally a furniture project has the contract from the council to collect scrap electronics, free of charge, and they then re-use and recycle.
Maybe you might have something similar?

Failing that, putting them in your front garden might work.

I booked a free collection of quite a few items and out into the garden they went, on a very wet night, 20 mins later one of the items was gone!

That's okay, as long as it's got a SCART (and even if it hasn't there are ways round that with a modulator).

Picture quality of a good CRT will knock the pants off an LCD / plasma any day.

If you take them to the tip then they will be recycled, as long as you put them in the right zone.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
