Go back in and discuss this with them face to face.
You didn't just book it in for a service, you actually got them to do a quote? If the myopic tech then proceeded to do the wrong service, do an unrequested MOT and screw up your service history, do you think what was done was any good?
Get a refund and go elsewhere, you really don't want to put your low mileage, infrequently maintained car in this bunch of Charlies hands.
Incidentally, the MOT is valid for 12 months from issue, they can't rescind it at the VTS and there is no reason to redo it when the car was officially due its first one.

    Thanks all :)

No, it wasn't a Kwik Fit! :D They are a reputable local garage who many people in my workplace have used and have all highly recommended. They run a service where they give 5% discount to employees of local businesses and will pick up and drop off the car to/from the office. I didn't need to ask for a refund, because I haven't yet paid - after they've completed the work you can either call up and pay over the phone, or do a bank transfer.

I emailed originally asking for a ballpark figure for the service and could I book it in, and was provided with a full quote.

It seems to me that they were having a bad day in the office. I've emailed the lady this morning who quoted and arranged everything for me and she responded quickly apologising for the mistake. From what she told me and what I know of the mechanics there, I trust that it was a bad day administratively (they were instructed that I had requested an MOT, even though it wasn't due there's not necessarily any reason to doubt that was the case) and that the actual work carried out was all done, but they are going to provide me with full details of all work that they carried out.

She has issued a new invoice minus the MOT fee, and also minus the oil filter/cabin filter fees which she admits should have been quoted originally but she missed them off and because that's her mistake I don't have to pay it. She's also going to arrange for the logbook to be sorted out.

In my email I just queried the two points, I didn't demand anything or offer anything and her response was apologetic and friendly and I got the outcome I wanted so I'm happy. Glad I didn't go storming in demanding things as I probably would have ended up with less! :)

Thanks for the update, your approach and their response should be regularly quoted as models for how to behave.

Yes, it's usually best to start reasonable and give them the chance to sort out their mistake. Unfortunately a lot of people now go in with all guns blazing and don't help. People make mistakes, it's how they sort them out that counts.

Only it's not 8 months MOT which doesn't need to be done in 4 months, it's 4 months MOT which doesn't need to be done in 8 months.
Whoops!.........................& did you get the "new"(now free) MOT, or is that all online now.

Well done, clearly a comprehensive job has been done. You no doubt can tell by the white grease on the hinges.
