Could it be a Channel Island import? Hundreds of ex hire cars come back to the UK mainland every 6 months from there and are then given UK mainland plates, so you car could have been first registered in Jersey in September 2001, then first registered in the UK mainland in March 2002 but have the older plate.0

It its declared new at first reg. Thanks anyhow have spoken with the DVLA whom have advised there was an error when it was taken off a private plate and should be 02. Been told to send my V5, MOT and photocopy of tax disc with a letter. They wont charge me but will need to get new plates and they will issue a new 02 reg.0

Glad you got that bit sorted, it won't be without cost to you though, once you get the forms to authorise the plates, the shop may charge £10-£20, you have to inform the insurers, mine charged £25.0 -

Thanks I have costed the plates up at £16 each at Halfords, then i will find out how much Diamond want to charge me for the privilege of change of reg.0 -
Given that the value difference between a 51-plate and an 02-plate, otherwise identical, will be just about zero - is it REALLY worth the effort?0
