My car has a 51 plate on it however the first date of reg is 21/03/2002.I was under the impression it should be an 02 plate? I know the car had a private plate in the past a few years back. Is there anyway of knowing if the car still has a private number plate or sorting the reg out?

As above, all the cars I've owned have been pre registration. My 56 plate was actually registered Jan 07, and my current (x reg) was registered just before the 51 came into affect.0

I'm not sure if you both have misread the OP's post, they mention the car is showing as registered after 1.3.2002 which would indeed sport a 02 plate. It could be as the OP may suspect that the car has some kind of cherished plate (wha is personal to one may not be so to another
Or indeed the OP may have misread the 21.2.2002 for 21.3.20020 -
You're right it should be on a 02. Are you sure its not on a private plate now?0

If it isn't a personal plate, then I reckon most likely is that it was a personal import. First reg overseas between 1/9/01 and 28/2/02, first UK reg 21/3/02.
If that's the case, there'll be two "First Reg" dates on the V5C, one "First Reg", and one "First Reg in UK", and a note on the front cover about it having been previously registered abroad.
Back then, personal imports were a good way to get big discounts.0 -
I fail to see why people use the term 'private plate' or 'personal plate' when the correct term is 'Cherished Plate'.
The misuse is a bit like 'Road Fund Licence' because the words have been used for years.
Everyones number is private and personal to them.
It's only if they choose to transfer it to another vehicle etc. that it becomes 'cherished'.
Sometimes I have to laugh at what some folks cherish.0 -
The normal process for personal number plates is that when they are put on the car, the original number is placed in a cosy place somewhere in DVLA and when you remove the personal number they normally re-assign the original number.
There is no rule that says that the number has to match the year, only that it cannot make the car look newer.
I wonder if it might have been a dealer thing, allocating one of their reserved numbers, or putting it on a demonstrator before 1st March but not properly registering it, or it might be that the original owner fancied the letters available with the 51 plate when the dealer showed them his list of available letters.
It is not worth the effort of sorting out or the cost of any admin charge the DVLA might be inclined to charge. I'd be pretty sure that they'd say that there is nothing wrong with the number plate so they would not be inclined to fix it.0 -
The v5 shows first reg once and date is defiantly 21/03/2002 and number plates starts ow51 so would not have thought a private plate. Think a mess up by dvla somewhere.0

Does the '51' spell anything, if you squint, look sideways, and put a lot of black screw covers in the wrong place? SI as in 'missi', for example, but spelt badly?0

OWSI , people sometimes pick up the most bizzare ways of creating their cherished plates.0
