They do make hoists for different types of cars, but it really depends what you're trying to lift (weight / size etc) so I can understand why a MPV would be easier.

I've just Googled Wheelchair Hoist for Cars and there are several makes, here are just a couple.

I don't want a vehicle that looks like a van.
MY OT says the smaller car boot scooters are no good for me (6' tall & 14.5 stones)

What you want and what you need are two different things.

Citroen Berlingo may accommodate your needs.

I have a CMax and I would very much doubt the hoist would fit, the Grand CMax starts from £295 and has a larger opening.

The dynamics of the CMax are very much car-like, it handles like a dream.

I can't really offer anymore advice other than perhaps posting a question on Youreable where you may find more people in a similar situation.

No harm to trying to get what I want then if I can't make a compromise as I've made so many compromises since being unable to walk & look after myself as I used to.

Thank you as the Grand CMax is the main one suggested by the hoist fitter so that is on our short list along with Zafira Tourer & Citreon Grand Picasso C4.

Also thanks for the link which looks interesting.

I have a Ford C-Max with a hoist, I think it takes up to 150kg in weight. My wheelchair is a TDX Invacare, in case it helps you compare.

I went to 17 different dealerships, and it had the highest boot height (which is the crucial part for the hoist) before you started getting into van-style, or 7 seaters, etc.

However, the back of my chair does come off, so you do still have to put it back on. So it might not suit you if you can't do that.

I forgot to say if you have a low income and you need a larger car for disability-related reasons (such as your wheelchair hoist) - you could apply for a grant from Motability?

I got my full advance payment plus the extras needed on the car for adjustments, and the hoist all paid for by the grant.

jazabelle thank you so much for your very helpful replies.

My current position is that we would like to get the wheelchair with power pack fitted into the car without folding except for the odd part. I can't lift it & my wife is really struggling as she suffers her own debilitating issues. Currently we take off the pack then fold the wheelchair but taking apart & putting together is proving very difficult for her.

My OT came out as a result of which we spoke to our local driving assessment centre who were very kind & suggested we called Motability which we did. Before we knew it they were suggesting we needed to make sure the new car (if they changed as we are mid lease) should be future proof. They also agreed they would change & that there would be a grant given subject to the official form being completed & their verification of the figures.

We are on HB/CTB & are just waiting for the new award letter to send in with the grant application. It all takes time but will be well worth it if we can get sorted out.

Again thank you for your help.
