When I had a terrace house those of us in these tiny houses weren't expected to use wheelie bins (though some bigger houses nearby did so). We put our rubbish out in dustbin liners.

The rules were that we weren't allowed to put out those dustbin liners (or, alternatively, ordinary dustbins) until the evening before Collection Day.

I had a big kitchen bin (posh metal one) of a size large enough to contain a dustbin liner full of stuff.

When a dustbin liner was full, then I would put it out in one of my ordinary dustbins I kept in the back alley awaiting Collection Day.

If you haven't got a back alley, then you have a bit of a problem. Some of the nearby tiny terraces didn't have a back alley, so I don't know what they did (?presumably kept their rubbish in their back gardens until they were able to put it out?). There are trellis type arrangements that can be put in place in a garden to conceal a rubbish bin (though I doubt anyone bothered in those houses, as no-one else was trying to use their back yard as a back garden besides me).

Another possibility if you have a back garden (rather than a back yard) or are trying to use a back yard as a "courtyard garden" (as I did) is to put one of those very small lean-to type garden sheds up against a wall out back. No-one except you would know that "garden shed" was being used as a rubbish storage area, rather than as a garden shed. There are also those type of garden bench type things with integral storage that could be used for that purpose.

Most recently When I lived in a terraced house the bins were kept outside at the front. It isn't ideal as of course there are those who would dump all sorts of crap into them without worrying about whose they were, or whether they were putting things in the correct recycling bins (we all had 3 wheelie bins per house)

The housebefore that, there was an alley behind the houses and the bins were put out, and collected, at the back. For my house the alley was wide enough that the vans could get down it, but on the opposite side of the street it wasn't, and I think they kept their bins in the back yards, but had to wheel then to the end of the alley on bin day.

My brother says that he takes his out of the back gate and round to the front, which is quite a trek as he is about 4 houses into the terrace, but he prefers that to bringing it through the house.

Watch what the neighbours do. Are all the back gardens completely enclosed, or do some have a gate onto a pathway?
All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)
  • Are you going to be under a different council in your new house? My district council don't empty wheelie bins at all. They deliver (very thin) black and clear plastic bags to everyone.
As Luella-14 says, check the website. Mine is here - http://www.newforest.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=7911
PPI on Natwest loan, Barclayloan, MBNA credit card, and Mortgagecare all repaid just for asking in 2012/2013!

Barclaycard - PPI refund refused 26/01/13, ombudsman upheld 12 May 2014, Barclays resisted until March 2015 - FOS say Barclays are calculating an offer, they have 8 weeks.

Why not just ask the vendor/estate agent?

I live in a short terrace fronting onto a main road and the bins are collected from a lane that runs down the side of the end house. You can either leave your bin in the lane or bring it into your garden during the week.

We live in an end of terrace, and all of the other terraces have a right of access across our garden and down our path to the road for this purpose. May be worth downloading the deeds from Land Registry as the right of access is shown on ours.

Thanks for all your replies I'm sure it'll be fine, I will ask the estate agent to find out. It literally just struck me to wonder about it as I was thinking about how I need to put the rubbish out tonight at my current place! I haven't completed yet so can't ask neighbours :)

Why do you need to complete(or for that matter to exchange) to ask that question?

We live in a terraced town house and all the bins are kept outside in the drive at the front of the house.
