Upgrading provisional insurance once passed.

Hi.

I bought my car in April 2014 and took out provisional car insurance with Diamond for £700 for the year.

My driving test is on 1st August and if I pass I need to have the car insured by the following Monday (4th) so I can get to work.

I was just wondering what kind of price increases I can expect and if I can use this insurance as "experience" when looking for new full licence quotes?

I'm the named driver on my car (none of that illegal secondary driver stuff going on, don't worry!)

To be honest the price may increase or decrease, depending on your age, car make and model, and location.

Arguments go both ways for this: as a provisional learner you must have an experienced driver with you, who in theory will stop you having or casuing an accident.
Bt having passed your test you are deemed to have sufficient skills to drive the car safely without the need for the driver.
    - Diamond being a speialist insurer may well be one of the ones that lowers the premium, but you'll need to ask them.

As for gaining a no claims bonus, i dont see why not. Unless it specifically says you wont in your policy

If you haven't already do some dummy quotes on a comparison site with you passing today and wanting cover in a couple if days. I know when my son passed he couldn't earn a no claims bonus as it was considered he wasn't driving without instruction, I cannot remember who he was with but his doubled, he was however insured on my car as a provisional driver so his provisional year was only £300.

Your the named driver on your own car? Who is the policy holder?

Will the new policy be in your name?

As you gave no details about yourself, car etc how cany anyone get close to an accurate price?

Anything between £700 and £3000 is going to the in the ballpark. Unless 1992 is your DOB and you have a Freelander then £8000 is the cheapest quote i got for someone of a similar age who just passed their test.

  • I agree to doing dummy quotes, but first go into your browser internet options and delete your cookie files (and do it every time before you run a dummy quote) as it gives a better accurate quote.

It depends what you have actually bought.

Normally, or should I say traditionally, you simply get a motor insurance policy and it just happens to be that the policyholder is a learner driver. When you pass, you inform them of this, they charge you and admin fee (often around £35) and an additional premium for the increased risk you now represent until the end of the policy year. At the end of that year you get a renewal quote with 1 years ncd and can shop around or stay where you are.

These days there are actual "learner driver" policies, normally they run parallel with a standard policy on the car, but either way they self terminate as soon as you pass. You then have to buy a new policy either with the same provider or elsewhere. Typically you only get credit for each complete year with a single provider on a single policy. Even if you do go over 1 year on one of these learner policies you rarely get any NCD but that ultimately varies between providers

    D'oh, I mean't the policy holder haha.

I'm 22 on wednesday, I have a 2010 citroen c1 and my OH will be a secondary driver on the policy (licence held for 12 years, 11 years no claims)

his no claims will not be counted for as named drivers go but his experience accident free points free etc, works job description and his license period (in this case is a plus).

in some cases a spouse/common law partner on the policy can increase the premium it depends on the insurer diamond are female driver specialist having a male on there could increase it.

It is illegal for insurers to factor gender into pricing and so I doubt Diamond do increase pricing for adding a male to the policy.

Certainly in some cases it can increase it, when they have a host of points and recent accidents to their name but generally an Insured and Spouse policy will be cheaper than an Insured Only Driver policy as long as the spouse has a full license and a reasonable history.

OH had an impeccable record. Never had points on his licence or had any accidents and he has brought my provisional insurance down a lot.

I just have no idea if I'm going to have to fork out a shedload of money or a reasonable amount.
