getting email on phone

I know this probably sounds a bit daft - I've tried a search, but don't know exactly how to phrase it!

I have a smart phone (Galaxy S3) and can access emails (Gmail). I use this rarely as I have a poor mobile signal at home, so really only use it when away for a day or two (maybe once a month)

I get quite a lot of "promotions" mail which I quite like most of the time as I often use the deals that come through. I mostly unsubscribe to those I don't want, though some a very difficult to shake!
When I put on data roaming on my mobile, it downloads ALL of my email - spam, promotional stuff etc. Usually this doesn't use up my 500 MB per month allowance.

However, I am about to go away for a few weeks. I won't be in a position to use the promotional email, and would like to just be able to download the personal emails so that my allowance doesn't get used up.

But I don't have a clue as to how to go about it! Can anybody tell me if it can be done & if so how?

Thanks so much!!!

Are the promotional emails being sent to the same address as the personal emails?

You are confusing 'data roaming' with 'data enabled'. Your email will download once you have data enabled, as long as you are still on your home network.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    I think it's impossible.
However, unless you open a e-mail and ask to "Show pictures", downloaded e-mails generally use very small amounts of data.

Thank you - I may be confusing terms. When I am at home, with the home WiFi on the phone, yes they all download, but it doesn't cost me anything! When I am away, they download when I switch on "mobile data" (I have 500mb per month on my plan)

Yes, and I guess I could alter that - will consider how worthwhile it is. Thanks

You will need to alter that and then you can seperate the emails much easier

I think you can set the handset to just download the headers, not the actual email, until you select the ones you want to read.

Have you tried accessing your email account through the web browser?

As you are using the GMAIL app its easy to do. Tap settings, tap your email address, tap Manage Labels. Tap 'Promotions' and set Sync to None. If you do this with Updates, Social etc then only 'Primary' will sync and you will just receive personal emails.
