New house - change supplier under Deemed Contract?

Recently moved into a new property and received a letter from Npower saying I'd automatically become a customer under a 'deemed contract'. I've just had to take them to the ombudsmen when in my last property as I had no end of bother with them.

They're asking for meter readings - can I use e.g. uSwitch to change over straight off the bat or am I tied to them in any way? The letter they sent says it's the Standard plan so there shouldn't be exit fees but, given experience of their admin, I'm wondering if initiating a switch before giving any readings etc will cause any bother?

Theres a deemed contract with the existing supplier - which only has to last until the change of supplier is completed.. it ensures that readings are closed off correctly with each supplier.. so give readings and then minimise usage over the first month - i.e. contact npower with opening readings (so they can bill the outgoing occupant correctly), then contact who you wish to switch to..

Thanks Stu - so is it better waiting until the first bill/month are out of the way before initiating the switch (or just after the readings have been submitted)?

  • There is a thread here from yesterday detailing the woes people get into by not informing their supplier of meter readings when they move in. Feel free to do leave npower (I know I would!) but make sure you give them a reading ASAP. If you don't, they can use estimated bills, and there will be nothing you can do about it.

If you want to switch, why wait? It will take 5 weeks anyway. You can't estimate your annual consumption anyway from one month's usage in the middle of summer when the heating is off.
As above, you should have contacted them on day one to open an account and give opening readings. Once this is done, you can commence a switch.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
