You entered a deemed contract with BG the day you started using energy at the new property. You should have given them readings as they were your supplier.They are, quite rightly, asking for payment for energy used when you were a customer of theirs. Unfortunately, they don't have actual readings to go off, so are estimating.
There should be a big banner on this site telling people who move homes to give meter readings the day they move in to the incumbent supplier.0 -

I'm of the opinion that "life skills" should be added to the school curriculum and people are taught how to manage utilities, bills, meter readings, responsibilites that become theirs once they move away from the parents.0
