Sony Vaio laptop

Hello thank you for looking at this problem for me . I bought a Sony Vaio laptop from Amazon in August 21 2012, it was nearly £500 and yesterday it completely refused to work. I don't know what to do now as Amazon have told me to go to Sony for any recourse and I just wondered if this was the right thing to do . I mean after all I expected to get more than 26 months out of the laptop or am I being unreasonable? I hate confrontation but think I need to do something about this as it seems wrong to me for nothing to be done by anyone, the laptop has never been dropped or damaged we think the hard drive has gone , well my dd does anyway am not very savvy technically lol thanks for looking at my problem anyway I hope someone can set me straight over this it is stopping me from sleeping and am back in on nights tonight am such a worry guts lol ! :)

Your contract is with Amazon so any claim you have will be with them unless Sony offered a warranty that is still in force after 26 months. However since it is more than 6 months since you bought the laptop the burden of proof (that the fault is inherent rather than caused by user error/fair wear and tear) is with you. Amazon can require you to get an independent engineers report stating that the fault is inherent before they do anything.

What specifically is wrong with it though? There may be a simple fix (and the techy board here will be able to advise you on that)

Contracts with amazon themselves are not governed by UK law, they are instead governed by the laws of luxembourg. They will have a "sale of goods act" but it may differ from ours.

However given the length of time you will likely be required to prove the fault is inherent (usually done via independent report).

Is your laptop perhaps still under warranty? You say you've had it 26 months but also said you bought it 21st Aug 2012 (which would make it 22-23 months old atm).

When you say it wont work at all, what do you mean? If its not booting up at all then i think its more likely the motherboard, cpu or power supply rather than the hard drive. Usually when a hard drive fails the computer will start but the operating system wont load (as hard drive has failed/is corrupt).
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Check what warranty came with it, and if its still under warranty get in touch with Sony and request repair.

What exactly happens when you turn it on? Nothing? Or do you get an error message?

If the computer is starting up but the operating system won't boot, it could well be a software related problem.
What exactly are you seeing after you press the power button? and can you hear any noise coming from the hard drive?

My first step would be booting into 'safe mode' and doing a system restore to a time and date before the problem occurred...if that fails post on the techie board for help. They guys over there are pretty damn hot with their help.
