£2750 watch win - Dilemma!

I have just won a Longines Luxury watch from Hello Magazine. Thanks to hertzyabazas and Jennycog for posting. I received it yesterday and saw the price tag then felt rather faint! Once I had recovered I began to think of how to sell this pricey item. I cannot keep it as I am a disabled lady unable to work and I am in desperate need of an electric wheelchair.

So I wish to sell it. Have offered it to Earnest Jones who cannot take items off the public, that leaves ebay or amazon. I know I will only get about half the retail price, but if I put it on ebay, a lot of commission will be further taken off of that sum. Could ask cash on collection, but worried. Has anyone ever sold a big ticket item like this before? Any advice? Thanks for listening guys.

Hello and congratulations. If you not familiar with selling online, selling a high value watch wouldn't be a sensible thing to start with. I would recommend trying any pawnbrokers or cash converter type place in your area or yellow pages and see where that gets you, hopefully you might get between 30-40% of the value, but it would be safe and it would instant cash.

Well done on the win, you could put it on eBay for a fixed price or set a reserve, alternatively, some mobility places might offer a part exchange for a wheelchair but you'll get a much lower price. Good luck in whatever you do.

Ebay is a safe option and you might get close to retail price, but remember ebay will take 10% of the total sale price you will get... plus any listing costs. If you go down that route make sure you send the item tracked to the buyer and also make sure of the rules if you do sell internationally, as some items may not be covered, but great win and hope you get a good price for it :T

I'm pretty sure Ebay has a cut-off point of how much they'll take, I think it's £40.

Personally I wouldn't sell it on there, I think your best best would be finding an independent jewellers or perhaps a specialist forum.

Gumtree is an option, obviously cash on collection only.

Congrats on the win I would as a big ticket price try pawn broker first see how much they offer letting them know your intentions to sell not just pawn. They will value it and make you a offer or should do. They will already have removed commission so the price they quote would be final offer. That way the money would be in your hand quicker and no possibility of being ripped off through EBay charges though the charges not to bad but with higher priced items more to pay

I'm just going to throw out some ideas/musings.

Do you have the paperwork etc to go with it to prove it is genuine?

Have you tried other local stores eg boutiques, bridal, designer seconds (or the male equivalent? Not sure what gender the watch is for).

If you don't have a good ebay history then you need to be careful - people may not trust you, or try to dupe you. You won't have a purchase receipt which is why I said about authenticity. Also take lots of photos. Sometimes people will claim you sent a fake, and when you ask them to post it back you get sent a cheap fake and they keep the real thing. Make note of identifying marks etc. Also check out who you will mail it with. RM don't insure jewellery.

Is it a collectable watch? Can you offer it for sale on a specialist website/in a specialist magazine/in a specialist watch auction.

Have you considered advertising locally first? Depending on where you live, there might be lots of people with disposable incomes that would buy a fancy watch. Try looking for a local sales group on facebook - although this carries risks just the same as ebay but would avoid fees.
