Moving away from RAC/AA

Seems that both RAC and AA have found out what I've been doing playing them against each other, just had a renewal quote from both of them, quoting in excess of £100 each for just basic cover + recovery.
Basically, I want the car fixed at the roadside, or taken to a garage of my choosing. (Eg. if it breaks down at work 40 miles away, I want it taken to a garage local to where I live).
Green Flag have offered £65, which seems a tad cheaper, but I've never used them. Seems that people here have, so whats your verdict? Call out times, etc?
I don't really want a "Pay for a rescue and then fill in a claim form" deal as I worry they'll not pay out because of some technicality.
I had the best quote for renewal ever from the AA this year for some reason. Usually I take out family membership, with roadside and recovery, and we switch between myself and my wife. Through topcashback, gets it to just over £100 normally. This year renewal was just under £100, best I could manage by switching was £120. I'm a member of ADAC as well, for european cover, so all in covered throughout europe for £180.0 -

This for the UK only (max 50km) - an EU breakdown is full repatriation to your own home.0 -

The op is asking about a UK service that includes recovery though. ADAC isn't suitable for that, as it doesnt. As you say, it's limited. Hence my choice.
I certainly wouldn't use them for a UK service, for us it's far more cost effective to use the AA for the family, with the option we decide on repair or recovery.0 -
There is no ADAC 50km limit for the UK.
There is a €300 limit for breakdown and accident assistance at the roadside. If the car is not fixable within 72 hours the ADAC recover it home free of charge (EU-wide)"Retail is for suckers"

The 300 euro includes a towing charge to a local garage, as does the 3 day repair time though. If they can't fix it in three days locally, then they will take it home. Whereas the AA will take it home when you say 'take it home' That's why I'm in both. ADAC for the EU, but not for the UK for me.0 -
The 50km limit is possibly because ADAC subcontract to the AA, who charge per mile recovered, so the 300 euros does have a limit. No idea what the euro per mile is, but 6 seems reasonable.0

Same here. ADAC for Europe and UK roadside assistance through John Lewis car insurance.nobbysn*ts wrote: »Whereas the AA will take it home when you say 'take it home' That's why I'm in both. ADAC for the EU, but not for the UK for me.

Lot's of people see the €300* limit (it used to be €200) and freak out. You have to keep in mind all the other benefits: medical repatriation, financial assistance while travelling, replacement glasses, accommodation, trailer/caravan, car hire, lost car keys, cover at home, cover for any car you drive, no car age limit, etc.
* BTW Greenflag roadside rescue limit is £250."Retail is for suckers"

I used to get basic green flag with my bank account (RBS/Natwest - you can pay £15 a month and it includes a 15 mile tow to anywhere).
Call out times were fine. Obviously we would all want it there within minutes but its unlikely that will happen. They prioritise women on their own (although that might be night time only) which isnt a bad thing in my eyes (despite being a bloke)...
In reality how many times are you thinking you will end up using it in a year?I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. The ADAC cover is fine by me - no need for any extra cover for the UK at all.
If my car is broke I want it fixed - not brought home.0 -
How many times does the average person claim on these things in their lifetime?
I've had to call the RAC out once in ten years -- so I use a PAYG service. £50 callout charge every time needed.0
