Moving away from RAC/AA

Seems that both RAC and AA have found out what I've been doing playing them against each other, just had a renewal quote from both of them, quoting in excess of £100 each for just basic cover + recovery.

Basically, I want the car fixed at the roadside, or taken to a garage of my choosing. (Eg. if it breaks down at work 40 miles away, I want it taken to a garage local to where I live).

Green Flag have offered £65, which seems a tad cheaper, but I've never used them. Seems that people here have, so whats your verdict? Call out times, etc?

I don't really want a "Pay for a rescue and then fill in a claim form" deal as I worry they'll not pay out because of some technicality.

try ADAC - a forum search will reveal good prices, and links.

You could look at new customer deals?
Not sure if you'd be able to get those though.

I get mine free with car insurance. You could look at packaged bank accounts that provide this service.

I have had experience in the past with AA matching (or almost matching, to within a few £) other quotes/ their 'new customer' price, when I've rung to tell them I don't want to renew.

I get basic Green Flag through my bank. I prefer personal cover, so called to pay extra to upgrade (I use other peoples vehicles on occasion). They wouldn't do it.

I took out an AA policy with onward travel/overnight accommodation for around £70 after cash back.

I have to phone the RAC every year and say your having a laugh, I have not called you out so i would like to pay the same as last year.

They have done this for the past few years so no increase, But its due again soon so will they reduce the price again?

Having the caravan cover does restrict me though.

The ADAC is the answer - it's a motoring club for the benefit of the members (over 18,500,00 of them) rather than shareholders.

The AA, RAC, Green Flag and others are businesses and just just like any other business they seek to maximise profit for their owners.

You need to forget the concept of membership of the AA and the RAC - they have only customers now.

Unlikely! I've been with them many years and they've always looked after me at renewal as I've never called them out.

The last 3 years they've held it at £50 (after negotiation) for roadside and recovery to anywhere in the UK but just a few weeks back at renewal they wouldn't budge. They'd only do me two deals...free homestart or 14 months for the price of 12 months (which this year was £53). As I live at the top of a hill I took the latter!

I got the AA to always give me the "new member web price", plus a little bit extra, last year I got it for £55. This year, "We can offer you free onward travel or reduce your renewal to £89.99". Err, no thanks, I'll try elsewhere.

I get the full RAC package plus the arrival add-on for slightly less than the price of the full package.

Each renewal the premium comes in at the full price. But they usually drop it back down.

If not i maybe joining the caravan club instead and moving to Green Flag.

ADAC don't do full recovery. They have a cash limit to a nearby garage.
