Moving home - what happens with BT ?

The thing is we maybe moving out of our home at the end of July and have to stay about a month with family before moving into new home.

We have landline and broadband with BT. The rental I paid for upfront for the year and that's finishing early part of August. My concern is the broadband and our email addresses. We do not have any phones, ipads etc to use internet, we've just got a pc. Phoned BT and they said that our email accounts will still run even if we stop paying for the broadband. I just find it hard to believe that BT will give something for nothing. Also what happens to anything that we have in BT cloud ? After all theoretically for that month we are no longer customers . We intend to stay with BT at our new home, but if the month ends up going pear-shaped we may as well move .

Perhaps this is one for the BT rep ?

EMails from most ISPs will run and run until a wholesale closure of dead accounts every few years .
Make copies of stuff in the BT Cloud to another free service sign up with GMail .

IMO it's better to have an e-mail address that's independent of the service provider (Hotmail,GMail, YahooMail etc.) You can then chop & change to your hearts content without losing contact or having to keep changing your e-mail addresses.
I saw this coming several years ago even before we moved house and have been with Hotmail for my E-mail ever since, even though I've had Eclipse, BT, Tiscali, Sky and now TalkTalk as my provider. It even worked in Pakistan where Tiscali wouldn't.

    Hi Longforgotten,

Are you cancelling your BT services completely or will you be using our home move process to move your current services to your new home? If you are home moving the services your email and BT Cloud won't be affected and will continue to work.

If you are cancelling your BT account completely your email address will work for 30 days after the broadband has been stopped and your BT Cloud access will stop upon cancellation.

    Cheers

You could also use a generic cloud storage service as well to make you provider independent. Picasa, Google, Dropbox, Microsoft etc. Most of them are either free or very cheap. It gives you all the flexibility you need without having to worry about your provider either going bust or mucking you about.

We had a similar situation we were "homeless" for a couple of months four years ago between house selling and buying and we lived in a caravan for four months. We were without our own provider as we didn't have a landline we just made do with our mobile phones and used the internet either in Maccyd's, Wetherspoons etc or at relatives until we got ourselves sorted out - changing provider as the previous one was less than helpful.

We uploaded all our photos onto Picasa as well as backing everything up ourselves on our own NAS drive and a portable hard drive as well. We still use Picasa but avoid supplier provided services as we prefer not to be tied down.

We will be at least one month without a landline of our own and will only have access to broadband via work or family laptop as we will be staying with family. It would appear that unless BT can freeze our account so that we pay nothing until we are living in our new home we may as well cancel as we've no intention of paying for a service we are not receiving. If our email address was still usable after 30 days we could stay with BT but it would seem that that's not the case.

Sky has a freebie deal on I believe so perhaps this is the time to look elsewhere.

Yes, but don't use the Sky E-mail address, get yourself an independent one then you are free to change in the future. We actually went to Sky because BT wanted £120 to re-instate the line in our new place, Sky gave us £30 back. We changed to TT after about 18 months as they were the first to install their own equipment in our local exchange which gave us an immediate improvement in speed (from 1mbit/s to about 1.6mbit/s) Sky are still only offering us 1mbit/s

I've had a quick look at the BT move process and it would appear that they expect you to move directly from your old home to your new home all on the same day. No facility for freezing you account because of 'homeless' inbetween moves.

Hoping BT rep is still following thread ??? have I got that right

In our circumstances we have no option but to cancel BT

    Hi longforgotten,

As part of the home move order we would need to know the new address and activation disconnection dates. If you don't know these as yet I'm afraid that there is no facility to freeze your account.

If you click on my username you can use the contact link to send in your details and we can take a look over your account info and discuss the options with you.

    Cheers
