So check, check and check again! Sign nothing and don't enter your PIN until you've checked.
You can check as many times as you want, but they press the button to be charged in local currency or GBP AFTER you enter your pin.
You need to explicitly tell them you want charged in local currency and check your receipt before you walk away.
Despite telling a hotel in Tenerife that I wanted charged in euro, he charged me in GBP, after I had checked the euro amount and entered my pin. I pointed it out and insisted that he voided the transaction and put it through again in euro which he did.0 -

Oh right, wow, I didn't know they could do that - useful warning! They did ask me at the hotels I stayed at - in Accor hotels (Novotel, Pullman et al) the PIN pad asks you to press 1 for Euro or 2 for Sterling..
Cunning, very cunning..Never argue with an idiot. Especially not this idiot because I'm always right anyway.0 -

Changing the amount you've authorised after you've authorised it is basically fraud. It's like changing the amount on a cheque after you've signed it. You authorise one amount (say 125EUR), and they put through a different amount (say GBP110). I'd be tempted to report it to the bank as a fraudulent transaction.
I did report it and was refunded by the Halifax, but they said the amount was too small for them to pursue.0 -
