Are Jaguar parts expensive?

Sorry guys just to confirm, the S-type has no interchangable parts with a Mondeo making the (slightly) more expensive option?
Correct, that was only the X-type.
A friend who runs and indie Jag garage told me they had more problems with S-types than X-types, with XJs being the most reliable.
Also the looks of the S-type are more... individual? May be part of the reason for low secondhand prices.
I am currently nosing round old XJs online myself, but only because I know a couple of good Jag indie garages who I would trust. I wouldn't even thing about it at main dealer servicing rates!
Echo the good advice about checking out the dedicated forums and clubs.0 -
An S Type of that age is that price for a reason. Some parts are stupidly expensive (price up a front wheel bearing - which they eat - for example) and many an old jag has been killed through a combination of terrible design and bad maintenance. The header tank is a great example, made from plastic that cannot sustain the prolonged high temperatures and pressures and leaks. (Cunningly when it is hot and running, from the tiny stub pipe that you don't notice when examining with the bonnet up). Did Jag radically improve the design? No, they moved the header tank from the bulkhead to the front of the engine bay to make it easier to change!
The Jag S (American Lincoln) is a great car when it is up and running properly, loaded with toys and very, very able on the roads, embarrassing many a boy racer with its speed and agility.
If buying, remember it is heavy so brakes, suspension and tyres(which are all over priced at the dealers) need careful checking, make sure it has a good service history, make sure all the electrics work, make sure the abs and traction control warning lights come on and go off at start up properly and the niggly things like the boot opening from the exterior button and the back reversing sensors work and tail lights don't resemble disco lights.
Great cars, but if you want to run a budget, easy and cheap to care for mid-range exec car, buy a 5 Series instead.
Totally agree with the above.
At £1500 theres still a load of potential bills looming, some of which could make the car uneconomical to repair.
You're in a bit of a no mans land price wise there. There are 1999 cars that can be bought for £700 that can be scrapped and recover a lot of the cost if something major goes wrong, and above it theres the much improved facelift late 03 model, which probably starts at £2,500.0 -
Didn't these s types come with a water feature in the boot as standard? ended up ruining electrics?
Alarm/imobiliser issue's where the alarm would go off at any given time day or night locked or unlocked.
water bottles were moved to the front of the car in the hopes that flowing in air would cool them suffuciently to stop the bursting or the connecting pipes bursting, it made it easier to fit but they needed replacing often, another option was to have made a aluminium one and put it back on the bulk head.
I would rather a MG ZT/Rover 75 4.6 V8 its a mustang underneath with all mustang running gear engine and transmission fitted with all highline add ons, sat nav heated seats the works.0 -
There was a very early TSB to refit the boot seal with Jag supplied cement. Haven't came across a wet boot in one for years, your more likely to have wiring problems at the boot hinge or behind the front bumper.0

I have an 05 plate 2litre diesel X type estate.
Excellent car, reliable. Mechanical parts, as some people have identified are as the mondeo. However, jag don't patent body parts, so they are expensive if buying new. I need a new nearside wing mirror. £200 + from main dealer or £50 from specialist jag breakers, which is one of the reasons I've decided to sell it!Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0
