Any advice much appreciated. I started looking at a 1yr old VW Touran 9000 miles priced £15k. Then I noticed that the new ones (in a different dealership) were greatly reduced (over £5k off) at £18k, for a better model (with bluemotion) 0 miles, brand new. Fortunately I would be able to stretch my budget to this... but what I would like to know is.... what is the best strategy for trying to get a GOOD DEAL on a new VW Touran. From my research, it seems better to buy before the new plates are released in September (I am perfectly happy to have a 14 plate rather than a 64 plate as I am hoping to have the car for a long time). I have now discovered that there is a new 2015 model of Touran to be released in the near future. My question is... I don't mind having the old model, and I don't mind having the older plates, but I want to get the BEST DEAL POSSIBLE. When are the dealers going to give the best prices on the old model?
OR... is my thinking flawed and would it be better to go back to looking at used cars, since the (new) car is going to be outdated very soon anyway. I understand this is partly speculation, but there has got to be someone out there who can speculate more accurately than me!
Thanks very much for any advice.

Manufacturers dont tend to have huge stocks of cars they may never sell like they used to.

Haggle on that used one and you can probablt knock another £1000 off. So thats a saving of £4000.

Your going to lose more than that in depreciation in your 1st year if you buy new. If keeping it for a long time that may not bother you. But worth thinking about.

£4000 maybe a years worth of fuel for you.

Most manufacturers offers now will be valid until the end of September, so you should be able to get the deal on a 64 reg car. If you are keeping the car for a very long time, the difference will be negligible over time, but before you buy, make sure that a diesel is suited to your driving requirements as they can be costly to repair further down the line. Check reputable car brokers such as Carfile and DriveTheDeal to get the best price on new, and go and haggle hard on either a new or nearly new car.

If you know the reg no of the used car you are looking at, use one of the car valuation services online to check out prices, I believe Glasses Guide has an online valuation that the public can use, or try a we buy any car type organisation, see what they value it at.

I'd also look at options that are not the VW, for example you can buy a new petrol Zafira for £10k or thereabouts. Obviously the old model, and only a 1.6 petrol, but that £8k difference takes some miles to recover!
  • HI, Thanks, appreciate that. Can you tell me how to find a new Vauxhall Zafira for £10k? Is that the advertised price, or is it a realistic target for haggling? The reason the Touran appealled is that it seemed similarly priced to the other mpvs and with it being a VW I would hope that it would give me quality and realiability over a long term (I'm hoping for 10 years plus). Thanks,

My friend with a VW Touran has just had to pay £1100 for a new dual mass flywheel (the horrible DMF you will read about all over these forums). Just over 3 years old and 32000 miles. I don't think this is an isolated case.

To be honest, I'm not sure the Touran is more reliable than many other similar vehicles. The decision around diesel really does depend on how many miles you drive and the types of journey you go on. Anyway, a couple of links for Zafiras:

These seem to depend on who your employer is, but are quite widely advertised, if they can sell at that price, I'm sure there is a deal to be done if you're not employed by one of those companies, or related to someone who is!

Theres a long running thread on here where certain diesel engined tourans are blowing themselves up leaving the buyer with a very large bill.

Zafiras are cheap and if you don't care about what you drive are worth considering.

Good luck if you're buying a diesel, they're about to get even more complicated over the next year or so to comply with EU emissions.

As above. I was up for a 58-ish plate Passat recently and the con rod thread on here scared me away.

Yes, the blown up engine thread

But before that there were the ABS problems

The common thing seems to be that any car just out of warranty VW want the customer to cover the cost of the very expensive repairs (although some customers have had success after a fight)
