But its not the same in your country of birth is it?. I can't go there and buy a council house for 30-60% off the market value can I. That my friend is part fo the problem. Its all the same for EU,I know foreigners who bought their houses and flats,so I am not worry about that.Leveller2911 as far as I know not only foreigners getting council properties.Would you not take it /buy it if you could?Since I moved to UK 10 years ago,I have never been without work even a single day, always paying taxes etc.As a real life example in block I have been living for last 5 years there was another 7 families ,1Portugese,another six british families.Me and wife working full time + overtime ,one english family 1 person part time worker, rest of families not working just on benefits. so now after 5 years ive paid more rent than the whole block to the council,or maybe two?!!That is why i think i should have Right to Buy with discount. Also if i buy let say for 120k council have 120k to build something.as example with people from my previous block how much council will get?
Rafal,
Have you not considered the fact that there are millions of people in this country who were born here, worked as hard if not harder than you and yet because they don't live in a Council house they do not get to buy a house with a massive discount.Don't consider yourself special Rafal , your not. Your just an average person but it seems you consider us Brits lazy but from my experience any EU national can be as lazy if not worse. You have been here for 10 years and yet your in debt so you haven't been that successful have you.
I don't blame you Rafal for coming here and buying a Council house for a huge discount .I blame the idiots in the Government for allowing Council Houses to be sold off to anyone. Council Houses are a valuable commodity that should be kept.
Please don't claim that you are doing it for any reason other than greed because you are not. You are as greedy as the next Council tenant who claims the RTB.0 -
If you believe that your naive .
Nu-labour were in power for 13 years and only needed an Act of Parliament to stop the RTB scheme but chose not to. They were buying the votes in the same way that Maggie Thatcher did when she implemented it.0 -

Does this includes anyone from another EU country? I'm not sure if it does but I assume any EU resident can come to the UK and be eligable for Social housing (after a few weeks of qualifying period) and then buy up the council Housing when they have lived there for 3 or 5 years.
I wonder if we can go to say Poland or Latvia and do the same?. I quite like the idea of buying a Council house in Spain for at least a 30% discount off the market value...
Damn I love the UK, its the land of milk and honey

OP,
Sounds like it is a good opportunity but homeownership needs a stable income so first thing is how secure is your job and how easy would it be to get another job.
Next issue is how much a mortgage is compared to the rent and likely maintenance.
It is a good idea in principle but there is no reason to get your self in a lot of debt if your job is not reasonably secure.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
Actually, Right to Buy is not exclusive - just because you have been a council tenant for 5 years it does not mean that you automatically have the right to buy your home.
Many tenants now only have the right to aquire, which is not the same thing at all!!£2 Savers Club #156!
Looking for holiday ideas for 2016. Currently, Isle of Skye in March, Riga in May, Crete in June and Lake District in October. August cruise cancelled, but Baby due September 2016! :j0 -
Thanks for replies.you all right .this is lifetime decision so better not too hurry.I am bus driver so if i dont have any major accident my job is secure:-)but many of us find job in other companies quite easly.with mortgage payments would be perfect to pay same money as i pay rent now.but to get this i need about 10k deposit:-(Loan £3450 left

RTA is common amongst the Housing Associations but not the Council Housing stock.
RTA is set at the full market value of a property with no discount linked to the time served on the tenancy.Even where Council Housing stock has been taken over by Housing Associations the tenants retain the RTB.0 -
Thanks Leveller, for some reason i always thought the RTB only applied when you had been the tenant of a particular property for 5+ years.
I'm another who disagrees with the RTB scheme if I'm honest, doesn't matter if you are foreign or not I just don't think it should exist. IMO the properties should be there for vulnerable people. The councils are hardly building new ones to add to their stock, with so many people using the RTB scheme, it just makes it harder for the most vulnerable in society to secure a tenancy with the council
