Barclays account closure after 2 days.

Options
Hi all,

Newbie here with some great concerns and bitterness towards Barclays.

On the 3rd July 2014 I opened up a new basic account with Barclays and a few days later I receive my welcome pack, pin, card, online banking details. With this I have changed details with my employer o my wage goes into this new account on 15th July.

A friend had transferred me £10 on the 9th July which I tried to use online and was declined, I rang them up and they said the card was blocked and that they would unblock it for me which was fine and the card worked.

Yesterday 10th July i received a letter from barclays dated 5th July stating that from the 5th July they are closing my account as they can no longer offer me an account. I have taken this letter to branch today to be told they can not tell me the reason and that the account is closed despite it only being open for a number of days.

I have logged a complaint in branch as well as call the financial ombudsman to log a complaint as my wage will now be delayed somewhat as my employer can not change the details on this months pay roll.

Would I be able to receive financial rejust as this has caused so many problems now. it clearly states in the T&C's they must give 2 months notice, there is a section stating they can close an account with immediate effect if they feel a customer may expose them in a bad way.

Where appropriate, the bank can refuse to inform you of the reason for no longer wishing to provide banking facilities to you; the ombudman is unlikley to change this.

Usually you are entitled to any money deposited in your account up until closure. Have the bank suggested otherwise (there may be legal reasons that are preventing them doing this)

Have a good think. Is there any reason you can imagine that a business that makes money offering customers banking facilities, does not wish to offer those services to you (any more). Have you checked your credit reference files?

If you really have no idea why a certain bank no longer wished to provide you with services they offer, then there are plenty of other financial institutions who I am sure would be only too pleased to welcome you as a new customer.

As regards to your employer, tell them you expect to be paid on the date agreed and that the banking details previously provided are no longer valid. It may well be you need to provide your employer with new banking details if that is a contractual agreement to pay you. But plenty of time for your employer to stop payment to the invalid account before Tuesday.

What do you expect any compo for? How much actual financial loss have you incurred, and how, in regards to an account you've only had a matter of days???
  • I have checked noodle already, no CCJ's but I have got a few defaults. Either way, the lady in branch assured me the account was up and running and I could change all my details. My employer has now stated they have to wait for the payment to bounce back so looks like my wage is going to be delayed by up to two weeks.

They shouldn't do a soft search and then a few days later just close the account, very bad business and has caused so many problems for me now. I am a informal carer to my sister who has terminal lung cancer and I help pay for things and this has now caused many a problem and upset for me and family.

My salary has been delayed, I have used £10 in phone credit calling the call centers, I am an informal carer to my sister who has terminal cancer and now can not help towards her medical costs and pay the rent I have promised.

Despite the financial implications of this it has caused so much upset and worry and frustration.

Barclaycard also have a habit of doing this with some credit card applications, Barclays bank have also I suspect done exactly the same to you.

it appears standard checks go through ok and the account is open, they then do a more in depth check where they have found something they don't like which has resulted in termination of your account.

Barclays are notorious for their arrogance and ignoring their own T&C obliging them to give a proper notice when closing accounts.

A similar recent thread - one of many: Barclays.

Barclaycard and no doubt Barclays, send hundreds of applications each night to some company, im betting its the results of this over night "vetting" that cause the account closures - national hunter...., I read this in a article some time ago and presume it still goes on.
  • After more in depth reading I can see this has happened multiple times to other customers, even ones that have banked with them for years. They don’t understand the serious implications it causes people upon a sudden closure. They let a transfer be made 4 days after the supposed closure as per the letter and I even spoke to the customer service team as the card was blocked when I tried to make an online payment and they never said then it was closed and let me make the payment online!

It’s in the hands of the ombudsman now but I will be taking this further, a simple sorry will not suffice.

I believe you are referrin to this Guardian article from 2008: http://www.theguardian.com/money/2008/nov/15/national-hunter-credit-agency

Yeah, assuming the information is still correct they can't make automated decisions from the checks that National Hunter do either - this also seems to tie in with the reason for accounts being closed after they have already been opened.
  • Quick update:

After hearing Barclay's closed my account and me complaining to the ombudsman about the fact my wages are due to be going into said account I thought I would try my luck today and I rang the customer service line and spoke to a lady there and after clearing security I explained I was hoping to be able to get my wages which are due 15th July and that I simply could not afford to wait an extra week for the salary to bounce back and be transferred again to a new account.

I was baffled to hear her say the account was still showing as open and after explaining everything to her and a 15 minute wait on the phone while she spoke to another department she advised that if I took my wage slip and full id to the branch they would allow me to get my wage out. WINNER!!!

She also mentioned that the account is with the frauds department as they deal with closures and that the case was still being investigated. Still none the wiser as to what exactly they are looking at but at least I can get my wages now.

If only they had said this from the beginning and I might not of put the complaint in with the ombudsman. Still, I will not allow them to beat me and the fight goes on.

Will update when I hear back from my complaint.
