I have lots of files, pics and applications softwares installed

Third Party applications won't be saved. You'll need to reinstall them.

    Is 500 GB enough?

If so, this Samsung is ok for £35.86

    £50 for 1 Terabyte

I have no idea if it's enough or not. That's a good price!

Check the size of the C and D drives on the laptops and then check how much space is left on them. That will give you an idea of how much space you will need.

Ah. Ok. I can do one laptop at a time right? So maybe back one laptop onto the HD and once factory set I can transfer all data and wipe. Then start on 2nd?

Best to keep a backup at all times. So if a laptop hard drive fails, you have the data stored elsewhere.

But you can do it your way and when reinstalled and updated, you can use Macrium Free to take an image of the full install of each.

That's me all set with a hard drive and ready to factory reset the laptops.

How do I transfer everything to a hard drive

    XP: Post #7

    The others: Windows Easy Transfer

You won't save everything. You'll need to re-install programs.
