I did look at the nissan qashqai, They are around 3 years old and £10k.
I have just had a look at the A class, but then seen the B class and I like those.

I know literally nothing about cars, so these suggestions and links really are helping.

Its easier to get in and out - and you get a better view of the road.

Fiat Panda / 500 /Ford KA have a high seating position.

I can see what is coming up further ahead, I would assume a little more weight behind them, which when in winds/going passed lorries or going 70 they are a little more planted on the road. I know bigger cars without the height will do that also, but as I said, I like the idea of being able to see what is coming up and I suppose feel (rightly or wrongly) less vulnerable should I get into an accident.

Im in my 20s (admittedly only just), getting in and out isnt a major issue just yet. I reckon I have a few more years in me.

I think I would rather ride a bike than drive a Fiat Panda/500 or ford KA :p

I have an old model B class. 41,000 trouble free miles in 3.5 years. Most reliable car I have ever had and unusually after this length of time I am in no hurry to change for something else.

    Why only small,

Bigger cars tend to be much more comfortable drives than the smaller ones on the motorway.

On motorway runs they can be just as economical.

Octavia scout, or maybe the fabia scout(bit to small IMO.

Octavia in L&K spec is fantastic if you can find one. the elegance spec has the main motorway features.

there is only one L&K on autotrader as an idea
    http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/used/cars/skoda/octavia/postcode/yo243ej/radius/1500/keywords/lauren/price-from/10000/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/sort/default/price-to/13000

Consider an auto they come into their own when stuck in traffic and town driving and in some cases they are more economical than the manual

Maybe its a different thing now, but when I was in my early 20s, safety etc was the last thing I was interested in from a car.

Given that you are Manchester based, doing quite a low annual mileage (and doing the same job as me!) I am guessing you may be doing a lot of shorter city trips? If so avoid Diesel as they will have lots of issues with DPF's etc, and at that mileage petrol would probably work out as cheap.
