they have charge for plastic bags in ireland for a long time now and not a major prob..........it makes you more likely to remember to bring your own which is a good thing - I am currently trying to reduce the cupboard space taken up by them and not add to my collection by taking a couple of those folding crates with me when I go shopping - when I remember that is but it is working for me slowly.
I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.

I re-use carrier bags to death. When I go out on my surveys and need to carry documents, I use carrier bags. For rubbish, storing things etc I use carrier bags. I cut some along the sides so I have a large rectangle, and use that to line the birdcage.
I agree that people should reduce waste, reuse, recycle, do what they can.

In the grand scheme of this country & the World, it's an irrelevance.
    It makes people feel good.

Does ANYONE seriously think reducing use of Plastic Bags will save the planet ??

    Hands UP !!

Why does everything need to save the planet? We can argue to death about whether or not we should drive cars or fly in planes, etc., (and trust us, we will :)) but plastic bags are just utter wastage when it's perfectly acceptable to reuse stronger bags.

I was in Ireland when their plastic bag tax came in. The difference overnight was phenomenal.

There's no suggestion of a ban in your article - perhaps you should rephrase the thread title?

As peter999's contributions to the smoking threads shows, he doesn't believe that previous experiences of measues in other countries in any way indicates how sucessful it will be in the UK.

And don't expect him to retitle the thread either. He has been shown to be full of guff several times in those threads and hasn't once acknowledged his "mistakes". That's in quotes because otherwise people might think his "mistakes" were unintentional.

Instead, you'll get a reply that bears no relevance and contains lots of smilies.

So why do people still use, why are supermarkets still giving out !!??

It may only be a simple plastic bag that everyone takes for granted, but people & businesses rely on them.

This is a Green Taxes/Plastic Bag thread, smoking thread is elsewhere.

Sorry, I don't have a clue what you're saying there. People still use them because they're free. Supermarkets give them out because all they have to pay is the manufacturing cost (which is miniscule) and not the cleanup cost.

But I would have thought that was obvious...
