Green taxes -Plastic bags to be banned ??

Actually, my wheelie bin is less than a third full every week. It is not recycling that solves problems, it is refusing to buy things that are heavily packaged or things I don't need.
I cook everything from scratch and buy organic food in paper bags that go in the composter or go back to farmaround to reuse. I get about 3 or 4 carrier bags at most per week and that is plenty for my use. I don't use bleach so wouldn't be happy with shoving waste in the bin without it being covered. I don't find water is adequate to get rid of mouldy or maggoty waste that has stuck to the bottom of a wheely bin that I can't reach the bottom of.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
Absolutely wonderful idea. Not before time.0

It's good to see you are taking steps to reduce your waste. In regards to getting mouldy/maggot infested stuff at the bottom of you bin, have you considered composting, or wrapping the offending items tightly with newspaper?0 -
You don't need bin liners to put your rubbish in, unless your council does not use wheelie bins. The liners just save you having to wash your kitchen bin out with water, every once in a while. (If you are recycling properly, you will find that the amount of waste you send to landfill would reduce considerably).
We don't have a proper recycling scheme either. Southwark Council offers decent recycling facilities for those who live in houses or maisonettes (basically anything with its own entrance) and a different scheme for those on council estates. Those of us in blocks of private flats with communal entrances have to make our own arrangements  and although I recycle glass, cans, plastic bottles and paper (by running it down to the recycling banks en route to the supermarket) I don't have any way of recycling vegetable wasteOperation Get in Shape

Put it up for election, same as the major parties do.0 -

No it wont save the planet, but every little bit helps.
Something thta annoys me is junk faxes.
I have had 4 today already. Wastes my ink and wastes paper. And I would deliberatly not use anyone who faxes me!0 -
Composting is an excuse to have a huge mound of stinking rubbish in yer garden!!
Tis why I like it, I just throw stuff out the kitchen window and say it's a wildlife sanctuary0 -
I re-use carrier bags to death. When I go out on my surveys and need to carry documents, I use carrier bags. For rubbish, storing things etc I use carrier bags. I cut some along the sides so I have a large rectangle, and use that to line the birdcage.
I also have several cloth bags so when I'm short of plastic bags I have no problem.
To peter999 - I don't think it's a question of "saving the planet", but of helping to reduce the massive headache of landfills. Each country has a limited amount of space for these, and tackling the problem before it's too big can only be a good idea. Plastic does not biodegrade, so it stays in the ground, unaltered, for centuries.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
