Not Divorced - Surname Query

Hi All

I'm not divorced but i've been separated almost a year. I would like to go back to my maiden name. So I know I can do this. But i'm wanting to take my kids on holiday next year and i'm thinking I should do the following to make sure i'm all sorted if they question me at security as I'll have a different name.

1) Go to registry office (do I need to take ex? His name is on the birth certificate) and get my name on DS2's birth certificate changed to my maiden name. (DS1 still has my maiden name on it).

2) Applying for a passport. I haven't had a passport in my married name. My other one has run out. Do I need to just apply in the normal way? The only (unhelpful) information I can find on it is this;

https://www.gov.uk/changing-passport-information/going-back-to-your-maiden-name

3) Notify anyone & everyone of my change of name (I will make a list)

Is that it? Am I missing anything?

TIA

There are very few reasons to have a birth certificate altered and this isn't one of them.

Just apply for a renewal in the same name as the other passport.

Oh I thought you had to get them changed if you changed your name as this is what I was told when I got married, I just never got around to doing it?

if you wanted to change ds2 surname to your maiden name, and have it as a "known as surname", but to have it changed ofiically - ie for passport etc you would need permission from your ex for that. x

Not sure why anybody would have told you that.

My son's birth certificate is in my name from when I had him (I've since changed my name by Deed Poll). My own birth certificate is in the name my Mum had at the time, she subsequently re-married and took a new name.

In my job I encounter a number of people whose parents (usually mothers) have changed the child's surname repeatedly.

It causes the child enormous problems when it comes to making applications for course and jobs, particularly anything that requires DBS checks.

They have birth certs as Joe Bloggs, exam certificates as Joseph Matthew Smith and Joseph Brown and a passport in the name of Jo Matthew Peters! It is excruciatingly embarressing for them.

Just leave their names as they were when they were first registered, take copies of all your birth certs and your marriage certificate.. cannot see any problem.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

Well I did think it was odd at the time! It was actually the local registry office that told me.

They said I should have my married name on both boys' birth certificates as apparantly if anything was to happen to either of us, the one who had my married name on their birth certificate would have more entitlement than the one who didnt?

Like I said, I never got around to doing it. But I just thought it would be better to have my maiden name on both certificates if I travelled abroad, then I can prove I am their mother without taking all sorts of documentation with me IYSWIM?

I'm only worrying because my friend took her little girl abroad last year (they have different surnames) and she was questioned at security about it.

Sorry you have misunderstood me, I wanted to change my surname to my maiden name on DS2's birth certificate. DS2's own surname would not change.

If a registrar told you that, he/she needs retraining!

    It's nonsense.
