Mexican dress up for school- help needed please

My niece has just announced that she need to go to school on Friday dressed as a Mexican. She should have told her mum 2 days ago!!!

She seems to think it will be easy as 'it says on the internet that I can make a sombrero with paper mache'

Of course with a working mum and 2 younger siblings mum is not pleased!

So any ideas I can give her for a quick easy outfit would be very helpful. Ive thought about cutting a blanket to make a poncho but what about the legs? sombrero? anything else?

Any ideas really would be appreciated as its not much notice.

Mexicans are known to wear ordinary clothes, just like the rest of us.

Green top, white shorts, red socks and she's kitted out in something resembling the Mexican football kit - topical and not offensive.

Mexican poncho seems easy to do. Just needs lots of pins.

Legs- has she got black tights or leggings?

Sombrero- what sort of hats have you got?

Short-sleeved gypsy style type top/T shirt
    Long skirt
Big flower for the side of her hair
    Lacy Shawl

Or if anyone's good at facepainting, google 'Dia de los Muertos' - 'Day of the Dead' and do her up like that

send in jeans and t shirt and advise that in this day and age no school should be pandering to offensive racial stereotypes?

I 100% agree with pogofish and BrassicWoman, I can't believe people still do this, and advocate this for children!

Accessorise with a toy rifle spray painted yellow so it looks golden and a stuffed toy leopard. If you have a tortoise send it in with a papier mache decapitated head stuck on its back.

(You want to be up to date with your stereotypes, not a century out of date.)

I agree, I always used to say this

It used to drive me bezerk when young uns come home from school and tell you they are expected to go to school dressed in some crazy outfit in a couple of days

I remember when I was at school, we were told we were to come dressed 'french' and two people out of the whole class did it
The opposite of what you know...is also true
